À PART DES AUTRES

Sarah works as a counsellor in a centre which offers internships to young drop-outs as way of helping them into the job market. When she realizes that too many of the participants are dropping out of the internship program itself, Sarah tries something new. She convinces the centre to ask a filmmaker, Margot, to conduct a workshop for the youths. Margot's latest film, which Sarah had seen, dealt with suicide among the young. The youths in Sarah's program seem to have only one certainty in their lives: that mankind is a failure. The only way to avoid participating in this failure, therefore, is to "opt out." And the only way to make life bearable is to stick together. À part des autres takes us deep into the world of those who have chosen to marginalize themselves.

AUDITION (L')

Louis, 40 years old, is a bit of a braggart who has long nurtured a childhood dream: to become an actor. Thanks to a cousin of his, he is asked to audition for a rather unique part: a father videotaping a final message for his son. Louis rehearses the scene in secret, and doesn't even tell Suzie, the love of his life, what he's up to. Suzie also has a secret of her own: she is pregnant with Louis's child. However, given his lifestyle, Suzie isn't really sure she wants to raise her child with Louis. In the end, everything works out for the best: Louis passes the audition, and Suzie decides to stay with her love and start a family. However, Louis's past is about to catch up with him...

AURORE

The year is 1909. In the village of Sainte-Philomène de Fortierville, Marie-Anne Caron, wife to Télésphore Gagnon, gives birth to their second daughter, Aurore. The child grows up in a loving and happy family, but in 1918 her mother dies of tuberculosis. Shortly after, Télésphore Gagnon decides to remarry, having fallen under the spell of his beautiful cousin, Marie-Anne Houde. Marie-Anne is not the devoted stepmother everyone takes her to be, however. Following the death of Aurore, a coroner's inquest reveals that the young girl had died of blood poisoning, brought on by the horrific abuse she suffered at the hands of her stepmother. The sensational trial which followed these revelations had a profound and lasting impact on Quebec society. Aurore depicts an almost-forgotten period and social milieu of Quebec's history, finally giving voice to those who, at the time, knew what was going on but preferred to remain silent.

BEOWULF AND GRENDEL

Beowulf and Grendel is a medieval adventure, part fable, part horror story. Loosely based on the ninth-century Anglo-Saxon epic poem Beowulf, it tells the blood-soaked tale of a Norse hero's battle with a great and murderous troll. Out of loyalty to the Danish king Hrothgar, a young hero, Beowulf, leads a troop of warriors across the sea to help rid a village of a marauding monster, Grendel. Grendel is not a creature of mythic powers, but one of flesh and blood -- driven by vengeance for having been wronged. Building toward an inevitable and terrible battle, Beowulf and Grendel strips away the mask of the hero-myth, leaving a raw and tangled tale -- one with distinctly contemporary overtones.

IT'S NOT ME... IT'S HIM!

Vincent Papineau, a small-time thief, gets hold of a painting belonging to the head of the Marseille Mafia. At a garage sale, he sells the work for a ridiculously low amount, not realizing that $250,000 is hidden inside the painting. Vincent tries to flee before the Mafia can exact its revenge; however, he is mistaken for a cop who has gone off on holiday -- a cop to whom he bears a striking resemblance. Against his will, Vincent begins working as a police officer; but, to his great surprise, discovers that he enjoys the work -- and the respect that comes with it.

DARK HOURS (THE)

Dr. Samantha Goodman, an attractive psychiatrist in her 30s, joins her husband and sister for a weekend at a winter cottage -- when an unexpected guest arrives. Harlan Pyne, a violent sexual offender, is convinced that Samantha conducted unethical experiments on him while she was his doctor. With the assistance of his troubled yet eager protégé, Harlan forces Samantha and her family to participate in a series of nightmarish games -- games tinged with psychological and physical torture that are designed to both deliver the truth and reap vengeance. On this night of terror, escape is not an option, truth guarantees nothing, and revenge will not -- necessarily -- be sweet.

Pip is a street kid who is meeting life head-on in the big city. On his 18th birthday, he receives his grandfather's Second World War memoirs on audio cassette, a gift that awakens the ghost of the past. Richard Bell trained as an actor and playwright at Studio 58 in Vancouver. From 1998 to 2000, he wrote and directed his first short feature, Two Brothers, a movie he shot with a borrowed video camera for a paltry $545. The "little movie that could" garnered substantial media attention and critical acclaim at film festivals. With Eighteen, his first major film, Richard Bell directed two-time Oscar nominee Sir Ian McKellen and Tony Award-winner Alan Cumming -- all before turning 30. UNITED STATES OF ALBERT (THE)

The year is 1926. Albert Renaud, a young man, wants to take up acting so he can become world-famous. His acting teacher, 83-year-old Jane Pickford, tells him that, in exchange for a kiss, she'll write him a letter of introduction to her niece, the celebrated actress Mary Pickford. On the train to Los Angeles, Albert meets Grace, a beautiful, young, polyandrous Mormon who falls for Albert's charms. Unfortunately, Albert is thrown off the train by one of Grace's suitors. He continues his trip across the U.S. by walking the Arizona desert in the company of a golf pro. In the course of this coming-of-age experience, Albert emerges as a true hero, and, more importantly, comes to the realization that nothing is worth more than the love of a good woman...

FAMILIA

Michèle's life is turned upside down when her fiancé, unwilling to cover her gambling debts, stops supporting her financially. With her 14-year-old daughter, Marguerite, in tow, Michèle goes to see her childhood friend, Janine, who has a teenage daughter of her own and who agrees to take in mother and daughter in her leafy, seemingly perfect, suburban home. As the two young girls become friends, their mothers suddenly find themselves confronting their own conflicting values. The film also explores the question of how value systems are passed on from mother to daughter. Is it possible to avoid passing on to our children those traits that we despise in our parents? Over the course of one crucial summer, both families are forced to deal with the fallout caused by online sex, double lives, unexplained pregnancies, and lies.

HORLOGE BIOLOGIQUE

The passage of time is probably the only concrete proof we have that justice exists in this cruel world. Some people would like to stop time in its tracks, while others choose to follow its path. In this story, three men in their early thirties have reached that age when it's time to start thinking about "getting a life", perhaps starting a family. But how do you handle the fact that your friendships are changing? That, slowly, your new family is becoming the centre of your ever-shrinking world? What do you do when you realize your youth is a thing of the past?

SHOOTING STAR

Four young women are finalists in an "instant star" reality show, and only one will emerge as the winner: Daphnée, a cheerful, dreamy sort who is always ready to help out a friend; Cat, who has been singing in bars for a long time to help out her family; Manon, whom her mother firmly believes will one day become a major international star; and Mimi, a librarian who still lives in the village where she was born. Like voyeurs, we follow the four women during the 24 hours leading up to the big event. All the leads are played by celebrated comic Claudine Mercier. For Claudine Mercier, an acting tour-de-force... and for the four contestants, the chance of a lifetime!

SEARCHING FOR MARY

This film is a deeply personal spiritual quest that takes the filmmaker across the United States in search of the Virgin Mary. Acutely aware that "fear" is the defining aspect of her life, she seeks, not a vision of Mary to cure herself, but rather a nation -- whose fear resembles hers -- against whose backdrop of wide open roads she can ponder the meaning of Mary's life, symbolism and choices. From Nevada to New York, from Detroit to Alabama, the filmmaker encounters individuals whose experiences go counter to America's fear-based ways, attitudes and actions. As her journey progresses, the filmmaker gradually realizes that, similarly to Mary, one can choose love instead of fear.

LIFE AND HARD TIMES OF GUY TERRIFICO (THE)

In 1971, Guy Terrifico was at the zenith of his career. Moments later, in a blaze of whiskey, pills, cancelled shows and gun shots, his career was over, and so -- allegedly -- was his life. At least so everyone thought until something truly weird happened: 30 years after his "death," a new Guy Terrifico album is released. Fondly remembered by his contemporaries, such as Kris Kristofferson, Ronnie Hawkins, Levon Helm and Merle Haggard, Guy's life story is told through archival footage and modern-day interviews with his old cohorts.

Mabbott's current projects include Ouch, a romantic comedy about an accident-prone man, Mr. Delicious, an epic comedy described as "King Lear meets Martha Stewart," and a mock-umentary sitcom called Happy Lucky. The Life and Hard Times of Guy Terrifico marks his feature-film directorial debut.

MALE FANTASY

Divorced from his wife (and reality), deluded, eccentric Andrew applies a magical philosophy to his romantic life to become a successful lady's man, rise from his depression and achieve godhood. With the superhuman persistence of a door-to-door salesman, he tangles with obstacles thrown up by a resentful friend, his lingering feelings for his ex-wife and the refusal of reality to co-operate with his plan. A painfully awkward comedy, Male Fantasy has been called "enormously funny" by Variety and "original and compulsively watchable" by Eye Magazine.

MAMAN LAST CALL

Alice Malenfant, 37, has no children, no obligations and no responsibilities -- apart from those related to her job as a controversial columnist for a major daily. Along with her best friends James and Myriam, Alice sums up her approach to life as follows: "life is short, death lasts a long time, so you better enjoy yourself while you can"... Although she has been living for three years with Louis Saint-Amand, who's also absorbed by his career, Alice has no intention of setting up house in the suburbs. Things take a turn, however, when Alice discovers that she is pregnant, having neither expected nor wanted to have a child. Unable to face the thought of having an abortion, and after having for so long said "no" to becoming a mother, Alice emphatically and disturbingly says "yes!". Everyone is shocked by her transformation, not least her poor mother, who wonders what has happened to the staunch feminist she thought she had so carefully raised...

NOVENA (THE)

Jeanne, in a state of despair, drives aimlessly through the night. She is a doctor, and believes that she is responsible for the death of a patient and her baby, who were murdered by the woman's husband. At dawn, Jeanne stops in the village of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré, site of a famous Catholic shrine, intending to kill herself by jumping into the St. Lawrence River. However, she is prevented from doing so by a young man, François, who has come to the shrine to pray for his grandmother. Something about the enigmatic François touches Jeanne. Not his faith, which puts her off, but his simplicity. François takes Jeanne to his village, hoping that she will treat his grandmother. Nothing is to be done, however, and the old woman dies in her grandson's arms. Her quiet, peaceful death helps Jeanne re-embrace her own existence.

NIAGARA MOTEL

Set in a down-scale motel in the tourist mecca of Niagara Falls, Canada, Niagara Motel tells the story of a group of individuals who are all, for various reasons, at crisis points in their lives: a knockout waitress being recruited to star in low-budget porn videos, a young couple with criminal pasts struggling to recover their child from social services, and a middle-class husband and wife in a marriage that is disintegrating in near-record time. The needs of the characters, their obvious failings, the sordid, unlucky conditions of their lives, make them so vulnerable that they can careen from the disturbing to the hilarious in a breathless instant. In Niagara Motel, tragedy waltzes with unpredictable comedy in an intense dance of life.

QUE DIEU BÉNISSE L'AMÉRIQUE

In a quiet suburb, a list containing the names of sexual predators who have been released from prison is posted in various areas around the community. Shortly after, a mysterious vigilante begins murdering people identified on the list. On the morning of September 11, 2001, one of the predators -- whose time has come -- faces six of his neighbours. Unaware of the events unfolding in New York City, the neighbours -- pretending to ignore one another while in reality spying upon each other -- strongly hint that the vigilante is one of them. Only after witnessing the predator being attacked by a passer-by do the six regain their humanity. The vigilante is unmasked and, after being chased through the community, dies by drowning in a swimming pool. In the larger world, George W. Bush asks God to bless the hatred shown by Americans toward their neighbours; closer to home, meanwhile, six neighbours share their grief and become friends.

RIVER KING (THE)

Abel Grey, a small-town cop, investigates the drowning death of August Pierce, a boy from an exclusive private school. Fearing scandal, the school insists it was suicide. But Abel discovers from August's only friend, Carlin, a student, that he was being bullied by a boy she briefly dated. Abel suspects that a schoolboy initiation went horribly wrong, and he solicits the help of the photography teacher, Betsy, who believes that clues are being left by the dead boy's spirit. As Abel digs deeper, he discovers a world of corruption and cover-up, and must confront the truth about himself: he's a man manipulated by the ghosts of his own past.

SIBLINGS

Joe and his Siblings have a couple of problems. First off, their step-parents are despicably evil. Secondly, they seem to have killed them. Now this mixed-up mess of half-sisters and step-brothers have to figure out how to dispose of the bodies, cover up the murders, collect their grandfather's inheritance and somehow stick together as a family, all without getting caught. Not to mention eldest sibling Joe's incessant need to keep tabs on his promiscuous sister, an eye on the precocious little ones, and a lustful watch on the girl next door. Growing up has its complications. Murder's just one of them.

SIMPLE CURVE (A)

Caleb, 27, was raised in the majestic Kootenay region of B.C. by his bush hippie parents. He loves his father Jim and understands his reverence for wood working, coriander and soya products, but he just doesn't get Jim's determined effort to achieve economic disaster at every turn. His father is a relentlessly unsuccessful businessman, and as the junior partner in their carpentry shop, Caleb is powerless to stop the fiscal self-sabotage. When Matthew, an old friend of Jim's, arrives in the valley to develop a high-end fishing lodge, Caleb sees fortune looming, provided he can keep Jim distracted. A small deception leads to colossal betrayal, and Caleb finally reaches that treasured day when a boy becomes man enough to stand up to his father.

SIX FIGURES

Warner isn't sure how he got to where he is, but he isn't particularly happy to be there: mid-thirties, married with two kids, trapped in a dead-end career in a boom town where everyone has more than Warner -- and more is what Warner wants. But it's not what he gets. Instead, his probationary period at work is extended, and the stresses of family life increase as he and his wife, Claire, struggle to buy a house. There isn't one part of Warner's life that's going the way he'd planned. But are his disappointments and frustrations powerful enough to trigger murderous rage? When his wife is vicously attacked and Warner emerges as the prime suspect, disbelief and distrust poison relations with family, friends and colleagues who struggle to find the truth.

OUTLANDER (THE)

It is the early 20th century. A stranger arrives in the small, rural and inward-looking community of Chenal-du-Moine and disrupts the lives of its inhabitants. The man, who refuses to give his name, is dubbed the Outlander. A traveller who disdains conventional behaviour and parochialism, the Outlander disturbs the villagers' complacency and scandalizes the community; he also elicits admiration and gains a woman's love. The Outlander ultimately leaves in the same manner he had arrived, but not before he has helped the villagers open their eyes to the larger world beyond their village. The story is based on a celebrated novel by Germaine Guèvremont as well as a noted Quebec television series from the 1960s.

TIDELAND

Welcome to the world of Jeliza-Rose, the young heroine and narrator of Tideland. What has brought Jeliza-Rose from the big city to the Prairies? And why is her former rockabilly guitarist father not talking to her anymore? And who is making all that noise in the attic? Jeliza-Rose drifts from the harsh reality of her childhood and escapes into the fantasies of her own active imagination. This is a fantasy world to rival all others: here, fireflies have names, bog-men awaken at dusk, monster sharks swim down railroad tracks, and disembodied Barbie heads share in her adventures. Tideland is as optimistic as it is surreal, as humorous as it is suspenseful -- a celebration of the power of a child's imagination.

THIEVES OF INNOCENCE

Thieves of innocence shows the dark side of humanity in all is violence and perversity. The film tells the stories of victims of violence who have fought tirelessly to break the circle of violence and manipulation that is, sadly, a part of contemporary Quebec and examines the ways in which the government intervenes for the so-called good of children. Produced by Denise Robert (The Barbarian Invasions), this shocking film shows how the children are sometimes doubly victimized: once by the original perpetrator, once by the employees of the Youth Protection programs. With the same audacity as American documentary filmmaker, Michael Moore, Arcand questions and confronts a system that all too often panders to the pedophiles and locks up the children. Thieves of innocence will leave no one indifferent.

WATER

Water is set in a House of Widows in India in 1938. An eight-year-old widow, Chuyia, is the catalyst whose forced move into the house causes a complete upheaval in the lives of its inhabitants, changing forever the hapless existence of two widows in particular: Shakuntala, 30 years old, devout and intelligent, who goes through a crisis of faith that eventually places her at the crossroads of a radical choice; and Kalyani, 18 years old, innocent and beautiful, who finds the courage to embrace the love of the fiery idealist Narayan. Woven in the background is Gandhi's struggle for the liberation of India, not only from the British, but also from antiquated religious interpretations that impede India's social and moral progress.

Deepa Mehta
Director

Acclaimed filmmaker Deepa Mehta has directed seven features, including Sam & Me, her first, which won the 1991 Cannes Film Festival Camera d'Or Critics Honorable Mention; Camilla (1993); and The Republic of Love (2003). In 1996, Deepa directed Fire, the first film in her multi-award-winning "elements" trilogy. This was followed by Earth in 1999. Water, the third film, began shooting in India in 2000, but Hindu fundamentalists burned the sets and the production was eventually shut down following death threats. In need of a comic interlude, in 2002 Deepa shot Bollywood/Hollywood, which became a box office success upon release. Water finally completed shooting in Sri Lanka in June 2004.

WHERE THE TRUTH LIES

Set in the seemingly innocent 1950s, Where the Truth Lies centres around legendary showbiz duo Lanny (Kevin Bacon) and Vince (Colin Firth), America's most beloved entertainment team. When a dead beauty turns up in their hotel suite after a top-rated televised performance, their reputations are sullied; thanks to rock-solid alibis, however, neither is charged with a crime. With their friendship and partnership in tatters, the two manage to salvage separate careers. Two decades later, up-and-coming writer Karen O'Connor (Alison Lohman) decides to turn this cold case into a hot story. Her investigation leads to involvement, with both Lanny and Vince, and what she finds is a serpentine, shocking tale of talent and treachery, love and lust, buried truths and betrayed trust.

ZERO SUM EQUATION (THE)

Leonard, a waiter in a restaurant, mugs people by night. Responsible for landing his brother, Patrick, in jail, Leonard commits his crimes in a desperate attempt to raise bail money before Patrick, a struggling writer with an unpublished novel, is destroyed by the experience of imprisonment. One of Leonard's victims is Leah, a literary agent. Leah, with few friends, no permanence in her life, and a job that she doesn't seem cut out for, is crushed by the mugging. One day, Leonard learns of the effect that his crime has had on Leah. Using her stolen identification, he tracks Leah down and befriends her. But Leonard's real intentions are unclear: does he want to sell his brother's novel, make amends for his crime, or maybe pursue something more personal?
