A WINTER TALE

Shots ring out one winter night and a bullet meant for a local street dealer kills a nine-year-old boy. In downtown Toronto, grief and suspicion hang heavily in the air, while the nightly patrons at Miss G’s Caribbean TakeAway resume their ritual of beer and banter. But one of them, Gene Wright, cannot go on. He begs his friends for help. And in a most unusual development, six Black men agree to form a support group in hopes of salvaging their broken spirits and redeeming their besieged community. A Winter Tale is set against the backdrop of a working class community’s unrealized hopes and dreams. Bitter and tragic, funny and hopeful, the film tells a uniquely Canadian story that features Toronto as a central character.

Away From Her is a screen adaptation of Alice Munro’s short story, The Bear Came Over the Mountain. Married for 50 years, Grant and Fiona’s life together is full of tenderness and humour, their serenity broken only by Fiona’s references to the past and her increasingly evident memory loss. When Grant moves Fiona into a nursing home specializing in Alzheimer’s disease, he is not allowed to visit for the first month so she can “adjust”. When he sees her again, she has forgotten him and turned her affection to Aubrey, another resident. Heartbroken, Grant visits daily, bearing witness to the growing bond between Fiona and Aubrey. When Aubrey’s wife, Marian, takes Aubrey home, Fiona becomes deeply depressed, and Grant embarks on his greatest act of self-sacrifice.

BON COP, BAD COP

Martin Ward and David Bouchard couldn't be more different: one speaks English and is from Toronto, the other speaks French and is from Montreal. One is neat, the other’s a mess; one is working class, the other went to Upper Canada College. One is into health, the other couldn't care less; one presses his own trousers, the other wears jeans; one lives by the rules, the other breaks them.

The only thing they appear to have in common is that they are both cops, albeit cops with totally different styles. Thrown together unwillingly, they are faced with a case whose geographic jurisdiction is as nebulous as the perpetrator’s mysterious motivations. The detectives soon learn they are hunting a serial killer whose targets are linked by this country’s national pastime: hockey.

C'EST BEAU UNE VILLE LA NUIT

C’est beau une ville la nuit is a musical and poetic road movie that takes place in the hot quarters of Paris and on the roads of France, America and the African continent. We follow Bohringer’s wanderings, meetings, lovers -- his idea of life. He speaks of his many and strange experiences and opens the door to the passionate and poetic world that enchants us.

The weight of the film is carried by colourful personalities and especially by the music, so essential to Bohringer's life.

Richard Bohringer
Director

Richard Bohringer is a multitalented artist. Undoubtedly, its performances in films like Diva, L'Addition, Péril en la demeure, Subway, or Le grand chemin -- he’s played in 125 films -- that make him such a well known actor, but Bohringer is also a writer, music-lover and author of C'est beau une ville la nuit. Who else but Bohringer could adapt this novel to the big screen? Here we find, not only the actor but, for the first time, the filmmaker, in what Bohringer has dubbed "a blues in prose."

CABIN MOVIE (THE)

www.thecabinmovie.ca

The Cabin Movie is a darkly comic look at the nature of desire, the challenge of monogamy and the definition of sexuality. A group of friends travel to a secluded cabin in an attempt to revitalize their lives through bizarre sex games. Katherine, a housewife who hasn't had sex in a year, is intent on getting some with or without her repressed husband, Mark. Jason, a happy-go-lucky guy, has shown up not with his long-term girlfriend, but with Ginny, a bisexual party girl. Ken and Maria, the “stable” common-law couple, are caught between discovery and panic while wrestling with issues of their own. By the end of the night, everyone’s relationships will be pushed to the breaking point.

BESIEGED FORTRESS (THE)

In the midst of the African savannah, sheltered in their four-metre high, tower-like nest, the termites are busy. Suddenly, their work is interrupted. A pick-up truck has hit the tower and part of it has been ripped open. The opening puts the entire nest at risk. And so begins a series of catastrophes, each of which takes its toll on the colony.

First, a tropical rainstorm damages and floods the tunnels and chambers of the nest. Then an army of magnan ants prepares to ambush the suddenly vulnerable termite nest. A merciless war begins.

EVERYTHING'S GONE GREEN

www.everythingsgonegreen.com

Everything’s Gone Green is Douglas Coupland’s first story written specifically for the screen. Ryan, a loveable 20-nothing, falls into a job as a reporter/photographer for Winners!, a crappy, local lottery magazine that’s given away at supermarkets. As things look dismal, he’s tempted into a money-laundering scheme that rewards him with material goods and the opportunity to live closer to the woman with whom he’s found a wonderful connection. As Coupland has done in the past with such novels as Generation X and All Families Are Psychotic, new questions are raised about the period in which we live. Is it possible to just drift into the new century? Is the middle-class facing extinction? When is “enough” enough? And, is there any hope that not everyone wants to be a millionaire?

FIDO

Welcome to Willard, a small town lost in the idyllic world of the 1950s, where the sun shines every day, everybody knows their neighbour, and rotting zombies carry the mail.

Timmy Robinson is an awkward loner until one fateful day when Mom buys a zombie to help around the house. At first, Timmy is surprised when the beast wants to play catch, but when the zombie saves him from the local bullies a true friendship is born and Timmy names him Fido.

But Fido is a zombie and the neighbours start paying the ultimate price. What begins as a small town story about a boy and his best friend becomes a biting satire about our world, the price of fear and the rewards of risking love. Fido will rip your heart out.

FRENCH GUY (THE)

www.thefrenchguymovie.com

Elizabeth Murray has just undergone major brain surgery and is discharged from the hospital much too early, leaving her bewildered, alone and confused. Quickly developing some strange and obsessive behaviours, she confuses a much younger man for her beloved Charles and persuades him to follow her back to her luxurious apartment.

All the while, the French guy living in the suite next to Elizabeth's is searching for a muse to inspire his latest painting but begins to wonder if he ever will be able to tap into his creativity with all that racket coming through the walls.

The French Guy is an absurdist comedy that will have you wondering whether it's ever really a good idea to kiss a stranger.

HAMSTER CAGE (THE)

www.hamstercagethemovie.com

Larry Kent
Director

Larry Kent wrote, directed and produced his first four feature films, The Bitter Ash (1963), Sweet Substitute (1964), When Tomorrow Dies (1965) and High (1967), between the ages of 24 and 28. They all enjoyed lengthy festival and theatrical releases internationally, where the name Larry Kent became synonymous with the term, provocateur.

After major retrospectives were held at cinematheques across Canada in 2003, Larry did what any natural-born filmmaker would do: he made another film, The Hamster Cage. At age 68, he went from being one of the youngest feature film directors in Canada’s history to one of the oldest.

HOW SHE MOVE

A stellar student at an exclusive private school, 16-year-old Raya Green is on the fast track to success until the unexpected death of her sister, a drug addict, changes everything. With family resources exhausted, Raya is forced to return to the community she so desperately wants to escape. Scrambling for a way to clear the financial hurdles, she turns to a most unlikely arena: the electrifying world of step dancing, a type of dance that combines jazz and hip-hop, with cheerleading, tap dancing and stomp moves.

Fighting her way onto the all-male Jane Street Junta step crew, Raya discovers that step is a mirror for life, and that success comes only to those brave enough to tackle it on their own terms.

ROCKET (THE)

From the very beginning, Maurice Richard had only one desire: to play hockey in the National Hockey League. After a long day at the factory, Richard would put on his skates and put his heart and soul into fulfilling his dream. More than his talent and agility, his passion and determination were legendary. He broke records on the ice and raised controversy off the ice. His magnificent exploits found a place in the heart of Canadians for whom Richard was a hero that transcended the generations.

PASSENGER (THE)

An impossible love story. A father stuck in Yakusas. A man accused of stealing who escapes from Japan. A woman tetanized by the passage of time. Two countries. Two cultures: Japan and Canada. Vengeance, wanderings, a different notion of courage and of solitude.

The Passenger is a thriller hiding in its wanderings the complexity of those who live as they can... because what they desire and what they get are two very different things.

WHITE PLANET (THE)

The White Planet paints a broad fresco of the Arctic, rich in action and emotion. Together, some of the world’s best nature filmmakers have pooled their talent to bring their intimacy with this little understood and poorly recognized part of the world to the viewer. The animals are present in full force, showing their ability to survive as well as their vulnerability in a changing environment. The film allows the simple, natural beauty of the Arctic to speak for itself and, silently, it makes a plea in favour of this strong yet fragile part of the world.

POINT (THE)

The Point is the name commonly given to one of Montreal’s poorest neighbourhoods, Point St. Charles. In this film, the stories of 35 kids from the Point, gathered at scripting workshops, are woven into a narrative structure by screenwriters, and the kids play themselves in front of the camera. The result is a remarkable drama about one fated weekend when the teenagers’ lives unexpectedly intersect to solve a mystery that has haunted their neighbourhood for years. A truly collaborative process from page to screen, The Point gives sound and vision to these teenagers born on the wrong side of the tracks.

PLACES EVERYONE

Benoit and Nick, both in their 20s, have been friends since childhood. One has just finished university in engineering, the other, an artist, is unemployed and lives precariously. Like so many in their generation, they feel insecure about the future and hope to avoid a banal and routine existence. When they decide to put their ambitions aside and throw themselves into a film project, their worlds keel over.

Light and touching, Places Everyone, is a whiff of Montreal. The taste and colours of the metropolis provide the ideal backdrop for the tribulations of our two young filmmakers. Between doubt and derision, the film depicts young people who are artistic, raw and free, and who will certainly bring a smile to your lips.

RECHERCHER VICTOR PELLERIN

In 1990, Victor Pellerin, young painter and darling of the art scene, burned all his work and disappeared without a trace. Fifteen years later, documentary filmmaker Sophie Deraspe retraces the past and meets with those who were close to Pellerin as well as the well-known whose lives were marked by the young artist. Alternating between interviews and cinéma direct, the film plunges the viewer into the world of the charismatic Pellerin and tries to sort out the contradictions and motivations in everyone trying to preserve his or her version of reality.

www.thesegirlsthemovie.com

These Girls is the story of three teenage girls who, in turn, seduce and then attempt to share Keith, an older married man. When Carolyn and Lisa discover that their best friend Glory is sleeping with Keith, they decide to seduce him as well. When each discovers that the other is involved with Keith, their friendship is put to the test. Rather than squabble over him, they decide to make a pact and share him.

The scheme works well for a time, but eventually all good things must come to an end. On a fateful night, a desperate and sexually exhausted Keith sets in motion his escape plan and everything comes crashing down.

A SUNDAY IN KIGALI

Bernard Valcourt is a disillusioned journalist living in Kigali, the capital of Rwanda. He’s there to make a film on AIDS while all around him the racial tensions between the Tutsis and Hutus grow. At the Hôtel Des Mille Collines, headquarters for the Western expatriates, he finds a source of inspiration in Gentille, a shy and beautiful waitress. The attraction is mutual but the first steps hesitant. They’re so different: she, so young, he so white. When the violence erupts, Bernard and Gentille are brutally separated. A few months later, nearly a million Rwandans massacred, Valcourt returns to Kigali, looking desperately for the woman he loves. Between the beauty of the love story and the horror of the genocide, Un dimanche à Kigali depicts with clear mindedness and compassion, the best and the worst of humanity.

HEADING SOUTH

On the sunny island of Haiti in the 1980s, foreigners lounged on the luxurious beaches. Brenda, Ellen and Sue came every year in search of romance, comfort and a break from their monotonous lives.

In 18-year-old Legba, they found what they were looking for. Godlike in his beauty, he captures them with his passion for Haiti. He leads them far from the tourist’s paradise to introduce them to the poverty and violence that was crippling Haiti at the end of Baby Doc Duvalier’s brutal regime.

WHOLE NEW THING

www.wholenewthing.com

Emerson Thorsen, 13, has just had his first wet dream, and completed writing and illustrating his first book. Meanwhile, the home-schooled youth can barely add two plus two. His mother enrols him in the local school. There, he meets Don, the English teacher, who, at 42, has settled into a life of perpetual adolescence, paying regular visits to a park washroom for anonymous sex. Surprisingly, Don sees a bit of himself in Emerson. Emerson, initially scornful of his teacher, quickly develops his first crush – on Don. The precocious boy, raised in a household of casual nudity and sexual openness, throws himself into this awakening of the heart with dangerous abandon. This is going to be a whole new thing. For everyone.

YOUNG TRIFFIE'S BEEN MADE AWAY WITH

Set in Swyers' Harbour, Newfoundland in 1948, Young Triffie’s Been Made Away With is a murderously comic tale that takes place in a time when Newfoundland was in one of her periodic states of Great Upheaval. When Andrew Hepditch, the hapless, gormless young Newfoundland ranger is sent out to the isolated outport of Swyer’s Harbour to investigate a common sheep-shagging / mutilation, he finds himself face and eyes into a vicious murder and way over his head in the mysterious workings of outport village life.

From the time the body of “that poor young silly person” Tryphenia Maude Pottle washes ashore, replete with 13 stab wounds, until the moment that the local preacher’s hand is nailed to the table in the doctor’s front parlor, the laughter never lets up in this comic murder mystery.
