Bad girl

In New York, Los Angeles, Paris and Montréal, women are claiming the right to hard-core pornography, made by women for women. They are rejecting the censorship called for by feminists in the 1970s. Who are these women? Are they business-people who simply want a share of a very lucrative market? Avant-garde feminists? Advocates of a new approach to sexuality? Whatever the case may be, these women are revolutionizing a business which up to now has been controlled by men.

Biographie : Jean-Paul Nolet

“We, the Abenaki people, speak little. This is perhaps due to the fact that, for centuries, we were silenced. Or perhaps because we prefer to think rather than speak. I don’t know.” This quotation by Jean-Paul Nolet, a well-known radio and television host in Quebec, is an eloquent example of the man’s depth. Yet the quotation reveals a paradox: this proud Quebec Native, known for his warm smile, spent many years on television, informing us of the latest events around the world….

Biographie : Raymond Charette

In the late 1950s, a Quebec radio announcer began to make a name for himself, quickly becoming a model for his younger colleagues. His name was Raymond Charette. Determined and hardworking, Charette was a gifted reader – as was expected of all announcers at the time. However, Charette – along with Wilfrid Lemoine – was the first announcer in Quebec to broaden his skills and become a broadcast journalist, working in both radio and television. As this biography shows, Raymond Charette was a true pioneer in his field.

Captured Rain

As water becomes more valuable than oil, “captured rain” will generate wealth or lead to war. Population growth has overtapped rivers and lakes; aquifers are being drained faster than nature can refill them. The climate is getting warmer. Now add the complication of Free Trade – water as a “commercial good.” This two-part documentary sheds new light on the most vital environmental, economic and social issue of the new century.

Caught in the Speed Trap

A self-employed mother gets advice from a time-management consultant on how to find more time for her children. A businessman is admitted to a psychiatric centre after working too many 100-hour weeks. In Japan, a 23-year-old girl dies of karoshi — death from overwork! This is humanity on a treadmill, people running to catch up with everyday demands, then slowing down just long enough to ask themselves, “What am I doing and why am I doing it?” This documentary looks at our priorities: how we make them, how we live with them. And how we don’t.

Cecil's Journey

This documentary tells the story of Cecil Fernando, a 26-year-old second-generationTamil-Canadian painter who travels back to Sri Lanka for the first time since the civil war had forced his family to flee 21 years earlier. It is also the personal story of a son trying to speak to his father and confront the demons of the past and present. Finally, it is a story about the eternal search for love in all its various incarnations: love for one’s country, for one’s family, for one’s self, as well as romantic love.

Chiefs

Chiefs relates the saga of the great leaders, warriors and diplomats of the First Nations whose stories form a central drama of Canada and the North American continent. A blend of documentary and dramatic re-enactments, Chiefs brings to life the power, spirit and mystery of the First Nations. The series also seeks to separate the myth from the men, to tell the story of leaders who could be equally Machiavellian, magnanimous, brilliant and brave.

Child's Century of War (A)

A Child’s Century of War is a journey through the bloodiest century in history – from the perspective of children. Recent wars have claimed the lives of more than two million children and severely injured three times that number. In their own words, in their own voices, in their stories, children take us through the events that have shaped us all. Through their telling of it, these events are reduced to immediate, pint-sized personal triumphs and tragedies. En masse, their story is epic.

Coq de Montréal (Le)

Serge, known as “le Coq de Montréal,” spent 12 years in jail for various crimes. He now wants to lead a more “normal” life. But how can he accomplish this without losing his “integrity”? The answer: by playing himself in an American crime drama. That’s how it goes today: it’s far less risky – and more lucrative – to act in a gangster flick than it is to rob a bank.

Daniel Johnson, député de Bagot

Former Quebec premier Daniel Johnson was the first political leader to bring credibility to the notion of Quebec independence. His vision of Canada was based on the principle of equality among its two founding peoples. Nicknamed “Danny Boy” by cartoonist Normand Hudon, Johnson was an ambitious and sincere man who managed to rise above his negative depiction by editorialists and opinion-makers in the media.

Danser par cœur

For more than 20 years, three folklorists have been collecting traditional songs and dances native to Quebec’s Outaouais region. They recently released a book and videocassette on their work. Their aim was not to produce an academic work of ethnographic research, but a guide to keep alive these unique dances of the Gatineau Valley. This documentary chronicles the folklorists’ initiatives by giving us an insight into their passion for traditional culture and follows them as they meet with local elders.

De parfaites inconnues

They were a group of 15: young women from Montréal, Québec City, Calgary and elsewhere in Canada. Water polo was their life, and they sacrificed everything for the Sydney Games – the first Olympics to include women’s water polo as an official sport. For one long year, a camera- turned its gaze on them – watching them prepare for the Games, intruding in their private lives, capturing their hopes and disappointments. For the first time, this documentary reveals the private and public moments behind the Olympic dream.

Disasters of Century II

Over the years, disasters have rocked the world, stealing innocence and destroying lives. Some of these disasters are easily remembered, others are forgotten, but all should be reflected upon. This series looks not only at the devastating toll of natural and man-made disasters, but also at the far-reaching implications of each tragedy on our own social history – at how something that happened long ago affects the way we live today.

Dying to Get In

Millions of people – the estimates vary between 25 and 80 million – roam the Earth looking for work and a permanent home. With the UN naming Canada as the best place to live in the world, it’s not surprising that one of their favourite destinations is Canada. However, as public attitudes harden, Canada is slamming the door. But that is not stopping the desperate: more and more, migrants are literally dying to get in.

Every day, millions of people around the world are forced to confront extreme situations. The first episode in this series, Enfants sans enfance, looks at the lives of boys and girls who, every day, leave their childhoods behind to become soldiers, prostitutes and indentured labourers. Episode two, Pillage des ressources, explores how resources are being plundered in the name of progress, science and economic well-being. Extremis challenges our consciences to face realities that we would prefer to overlook.

Fiancée de la vie (La)

According to a Malaysian proverb, death is life’s fiancé; life and death are inseparable, bound together by a kind of promise. However, we live in a society which separates the living from the dead, which continually tries to push back, if not eliminate, the realm of death. This documentary, which features children speaking about death, breaks the silence on a topic that adults fear.

Finding Our Talk

According to Statistics Canada, only three of the 50 most prominent Aboriginal languages are expected to survive through this century. These are tough statistics, but it doesn’t have to be that way. People all across Canada are fighting to beat the odds. It’s a remarkable story. This series celebrates the success of people and organizations who are reclaiming their language – and along with it their culture, their stories and their very existence as a people.

A visit to a ghost town cannot help but spark curiosity about the human drama that once unfolded there. Within each town’s compelling human stories lay dreams of wealth, feats of wonder and moments of tragic despair. In search of a vanishing past, this series uncovers the pioneer spirit delicately preserved within the peeling paint, empty houses and abandoned gardens of Canada’s ghost towns.

God's Explorers

God’s Explorers is a compelling history of Catholic zeal and mission among the Native peoples of northern Canada. Set against the North’s rugged beauty and dramatized by rare archival footage, God’s Explorers illuminates a controversial past that has left the Roman Catholic Church in agony. This is a story about how the missionary priests – the Oblates of Mary Immaculate – changed the North just as it changed them.

Seals, on the rocks!

Each year, millions of harp seals mate on the ice floes that drift in the middle of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. And each year, a war begins anew: a war of image and ideology which pits hunters against environmentalists, a war in which the real victims are a quarter of a million young seals. Seals, On the Rocks! examines this annual phenomenon and forces viewers to confront their own social and moral beliefs.

Hair, There and Everywhere

Hair, There and Everywhere journeys through the underbelly of our culture’s obsession with body-hair removal. It asks, “Is our antipathy a media-induced fad, or something with historic roots that are more than skin deep?” Through interviews with practitioners/estheticians, shave slaves, biologists, philosophers and trend-setters, the film penetrates to the root of the removal revolution, journeying behind closed doors to examine our cultural signposts and probe the influences of fashion, pornography and big business.

All they need is words

This documentary explores the way certain remarkable people, including the great Jane Goodall, interact with animals. Combining intuition and original experiments, these individuals shed new and fascinating light on the animals we thought we knew so well. Their new approach to animal communication raises important questions about our origins, how we relate to the animal world and what it is that makes us human.

Imprisoned in Our Hearts: The Relocation of Hebron

In 1959, Inuit from Northern Labrador were uprooted and relocated to various communities in the south. The relocation turned out to be a traumatic and disruptive experience for the Inuit and their descendents. The social and economic equilibrium that they had known in the past was shattered and was never recovered. The decision to relocate Hebron was to have consequences for Northern Inuit that continue to this day.

Innu Assi

The culture of the Innu of Quebec’s North Shore and Labrador remains vibrant. Innu men and women live in harmony with their land and their values, although they are often forced to confront the difficult reality of their existence. This documentary captures a fleeting moment in the life of a community, caught between its own view of the world and the worldview that white society seeks to impose. This non-judgmental documentary offers an on-the-fly glimpse of this community… a visit as brief as the time it takes to say Kuei-Kuei !

Is Love Enough?

Until recently, the intellectually disabled were segregated from society, living in institutions and routinely sterilized. It was assumed that any of their offspring would be equally handicapped. However, the intellectually disabled can have “normal” children – and many have a desire to do so. This intimate portrait of the day-to-day lives of intellectually handicapped families underscores the essential dilemma: how to balance the basic human desire and right to parenthood with what’s in the best interest of the children.

J'ai pour toi un lac

Many of Quebec’s approximately one million lakes are “sick,” the victims of water pollution from a variety of sources: pleasure boats, agricultural effluvia, acid rain and logging. Lakes that are in close proximity to urban areas are more likely to suffer premature old age. This documentary ponders some of the crucial issues surrounding the future of Quebec’s lakes.

All societies are made up of smaller “micro-societies,” and Quebec is no exception. Each program in this series focuses on a specific group, telling its story, introducing its members and contrasting the group’s similarities and differences with others. By learning about these diverse groups, we emerge with a better understanding of the wider social web of which they are a part.

Kink

Kink is a disclosure of one of the last taboos, the world of “kinky” sexual practices. Kink explores a variety of hedonistic lifestyles by following the individuals who choose to live their lives on a sexual edge, from their private S&M dungeons to their public play parties, from the leather store to the grocery store. Kink tells the subjects’ stories, in their words.

Lauzon Lauzone

This biography offers an up-close-and-personal look at the late Quebec filmmaker Jean-Claude Lauzon, and fea-tures excerpts from his work as well as the testimony of those who knew him at different times of his life. Lauzon emerges as an intense and extremely clear-sighted man, a fearless and troubled artist who made his mark on Canadian cinema. Behind the façade of arrogance – largely media-created – lay a vulnerable man who fought a constant battle against his fear of succumbing to depression or madness.

Life and Times of Veronica Tennant (The): Renaissance Woman

Passion and determination made Veronica Tennant a world-renowned prima ballerina. She danced alongside superstars like Nureyev and Baryshnikov. Ballet was her first dream, but many things stood in her way: she was shy and awkward, herdance teachers thought her body was wrong for ballet, she had serious injuries and was told she could no longer dance. Her triumph is a victory of discipline and desire over circumstance. Renaissance Woman is a visual feast.

Audiences witness real-life, dramatic stories as they unfold at the hospital: a once profoundly deaf girl who hears for the first time, a child’s devastating struggle with epilepsy and a teenager’s journey as she undergoes surgery for cancer. The series chronicles the ongoing stories of the “little miracles” performed everyday at the hospital – miracles of kindness and caring, scientific discovery and saving human lives.

Lives Interrupted

This series of true stories looks at what happens when lives are interrupted by events such as rape, war and incarceration, and how those affected discover meaning in the disruption and in life itself. Each show uses first-person interviews and re-enactments to look at the interrupted life and to reveal the “light after each tunnel of darkness.”

Made in China

Made in China tells the poignant stories of adopted children from China, predominantly girls, who live with white families and face the challenge of making sense of their identity and their roots at a very young age. They talk about race, racism, birth parents and whether they will return to China to search for their roots. These amazing children reveal the joys and pain of living in visibly adoptive Canadian families.

Mandrake: A Magical Life

Leon Mandrake was a master of reinvention in a world of wonders. This biography resurrects and replays the great Canadian magician who mesmerized North American audiences from the 1930s to the 1980s. From his beginnings in tawdry nightclubs to the grand stage shows of vaudeville, impresario Mandrake read minds, performed large-scale illusions and sleights of hand. When times changed, so did he, making the transition from the big stage to the small box with his numerous television appearances.

Apparitions of the virgin Mary

In recent years, the Virgin Mary has reportedly appeared to a group of people in Bosnia as well as to a woman in Venezuela. These sightings have prompted thousands of pilgrims from around the world to converge on the two sites. Drawing on the opinions of experts in the field, the testimonies of pilgrims, and those who claim to have seen the Virgin, this documen-tary attempts to explain the phenomenon.

Marymount Again

The year was 1977. René Lévesque was in power in Quebec; Les Canadiens were a dynasty for the last time. Elvis Presley passed away. It was in this era of transition that a group of students at Marymount High in Montréal left their friends and their school behind on a new journey: life. Now, 22 years later, the students return, along with photographer and first time filmmaker Paul Perrier, to document the different roads some of these people have travelled.

Maureen Forrester: The Diva in Winter

How does a renowned performing artist deal with the gradual but relentless passing of time? The question is central to this biography of the great Canadian contralto Maureen Forrester. Through archival footage, frank interviews with the singer and the testimony of those who have lived or worked with her, the film traces her progress, from modest beginnings in Montréal to a triumphal career as one of the great musical interpreters of our time.

Me, My Brother and My Father's Van Gogh

Monica and Michael de Jong have inherited a painting from their father. The painting, known as F614, has been considered throughout the century as either an authentic Van Gogh or a clever forgery. Are they the owners of a painting worth millions? In the film, they try to answer that question.

Men of Valour: Heroes of the Victoria Cross

One in 10. That is the estimate of a soldier’s chance of surviving an act of bravery that would be worthy of consideration for the Victoria Cross. Since 1856, only 1,354 individuals have met the criteria, and only 94 Canadians have received the honour. This documentary tells the stories of six Canadians who were awarded the Victoria Cross – including one surviving recipient. Personal reminiscences, photos, news footage, newspaper clippings and full-scale battle re-enactments are used to tell their incredible stories of valour.

Minot d'or (Le)

This documentary offers an intimate look at six intellectually handicapped adults. Although diagnosed as only mildly handicapped, the six individuals had been institutionalized for some 30 years. Today, “retired from hospital life,” they live together in a beautiful 100-year-old house on the St. Lawrence River in Lotbinière. The program tells their stories – who they are, how they live, who looks after them and what they hope for now that they have found freedom.

Mirror, Mirror: How's My Hair?

Mirror, Mirror: How’s My Hair? lets the viewers see what their hair, or lack thereof, means to them and to others. They’ll think, they’ll laugh, and they’ll be surprised and entertained. They’ll see themselves. It’s a window on human nature. Your relationship with your hair is intensely human. It’s about vanity and confidence, self-definition and perception, acceptance and rejection. Proof positive of just how much hair is a key to life.
