A firm of immense power and prestige, Young, Barnsworth & King contains an unparalleled collection of powerbrokers, former secretaries of state, presidents and prime ministers. Big Sound

A wickedly comic satire, Big Sound follows the trials and tribulations of Bill Sutton, a successful music manager trying to stay on top of both a crazed industry and an early-onset mid-life crisis in a youth-obsessed world. Although Bill’s a master at the business side of the music business, it’s the music that fuels his passion. Unfortunately, it’s the music that all too often gets forgotten. The constant parade of name musicians and obscure “wannabes” who seek his attention seem more demanding and bizarre than ever.

Blackfly

A comedy series that satirizes life during the early Canadian fur trade, Blackfly is set in the late-18th-century outpost of Fort Simpson-Eaton, located somewhere in the “great out there” of the Canadian wilds. Run by the British military and a fur-trading outfit called The Company, Fort Simpson-Eaton sits at a busy intersection of trade and transport to the continent’s heartland. Each episode revolves around the fort’s jack-of-all-trades, Benny “Blackfly” Broughton, and a regular cast of characters drawn from a backwoods pantheon of early Canadiana.

Da Vinci's Inquest III

Da Vinci’s Inquest combines three popular prime-time genres: the police procedural, the medical thriller and the courtroom drama. Dominic Da Vinci is the senior coroner for the city of Vancouver. He considers himself the voice of the dead and his zeal in uncovering the circumstances behind their demise is both feared and admired. Da Vinci’s Inquest refers not only to the inquest – called whenever there has been a death of a suspicious nature – but also to Da Vinci’s own process of self-examination and self-discovery.

Don Quichotte

Like the play by Wajdi Mouawad and Dominic Champagne on which it is based, this television adaptation of Don Quixote offers a daring and exceptional viewing experience. The story, which chronicles the wanderings of Don Quixote and his faithful servant Sancho Panza, was shot on location amidst the breath-taking sand dunes of Tadoussac, Quebec. The individual scenes are edited in such a way as to create a dynamic and powerfully evocative work.

Drop The Beat II

Dennis and Jeff are a couple of twenty-something friends facing the challenges of producing a popular campus radio show and experiencing the tribulations of running a successful record label. While their radio show increases in popularity, the duo have to answer to an audience that does not always like what they have to say. Off the air, Dennis and Jeff do not necessarily see eye-to-eye about the direction that their careers should take and success is often not what they had imagined.

Emily of New Moon IV

Orphaned at the age of 11, Emily comes to live at New Moon Farm, Prince Edward Island, where her vivid imagination and passion for writing create conflict with her adoptive family. Set in the 1890s but written for the 1990s, Emily’s story addresses all the concerns faced by young people today. Emily is an agent of change; she handles the challenges with a poise beyond her years and has an uncanny ability to complicate the lives of those around her in a wonderful way.

Evirati

Angiola Calori is a wonderfully talented soprano who dreams of being an operatic heroine. Unfortunately, she is living in the Papal States during the 18th century, at a time when only men are permitted on stage. To follow her dream, Angiola must suppress her true identity and masquerade as the young castrato Bellino. Now only one thing stands in her way: the Church has imposed “penis checks” in an attempt to expose such female impostors! Based on actual events.

Femmes savantes (Les)

Based on the play by the 17th-century French playwright Molière, Les femmes savantes touches on themes which are still pertinent today: the role of women in society, the dilemma of marrying for love rather than for convenience, the conflict between the virtues of the mind and those of the heart. All the characters in the play find themselves in one of these two camps, embodied respectively by Chrysale and Philaminte.

For Better or For Worse

For Better or For Worse is an anthology of animated stories featuring the instantly recognizable, much-beloved cast of characters drawn in Lynn Johnston’s signature style. Punchy, witty and visually stylish, the show combines live-action segments with six-minute animated shorts and 30-second themed bumpers, and takes advantage of the well-developed, intricate world of the Patterson family. For Better or for Worse is a reflective comedy about the absurd vignettes of everyday life.

Foreign Objects

In each episode of this highly inventive and visually stunning series, George – a documentary filmmaker with commercial tastes who must address more complex ideas – deals with one specific and ubiquitous issue. The issues range from the banality of evil to our media-fixated culture, and each program presents a dramatic, compelling and some- times comic treatment of its particular theme.

Fortier II

In this sequel to the popular police series, the SAS squad is riven by internal tensions occasioned by the “mystery” surrounding Anne Fortier, the young psychologist. Despite the dissension, the squad regroups, first to unmask an assassin with multiple faces and then to uncover the perpetrator of a sordid crime which occurred in the country. Finally, in an extraordinary encounter with a professional hitman suspected of murdering a policeman, Anne Fortier sheds light on several troubling incidents from her past.

Fred-Dy

Frédéric and Dyane, parents of two grown children, own a restaurant and a shoe-repair shop in Montréal’s Hochelaga-Maisonneuve district. Rather than taking advantage of the relative peace that comes from having grown-up children, the two have chosen to surround themselves with young people who haven’t exactly led pampered lives. This drama, which puts children and young people front and centre, shows that love, cheerfulness and ingenuity can overcome many obstacles.

Haute surveillance

Electronic surveillance, the use of the Internet to appropriate information, banking and stock-market transactions – these activities have become a feature of our daily lives. Haute Surveillance reveals the work undertaken by the Agence de Renseignements Centralisés (ARC), an organization which has continuous access to files from all government departments and private companies, all of Canada’s police forces as well as the Canadian secret service. Officially, of course, ARC does not exist….

Histoires de filles

tva.canoe.com/emissions/histoiresdefilles

This program looks at four typical members of the “middle of the road” generation: Dominique, Patricia, Judith and Marie-Jo. A tightly knit group, the four have known each other since junior college. Self-assured and self-reliant, they differ from baby boomers in that they no longer count on securing a diploma or a man as a way to earn a living. At a time when nothing lasts long – making it impossible to believe in anything – their shared friendship has become the most important part of their lives.

At a roadside diner he notices an interesting car with an even more interesting driver, Boon Palmer, a cool drifter who has stopped in for a meal. Learning that he is en route to Vancouver, Nathan coerces Boon into taking him along. On the way they stop in Boon’s hometown – a detour that will change their lives forever.

Kevin Spencer III

Kevin Spencer is the tale of a lovable, chain-smoking, alcoholic little sociopath who just “wants to fit in.” Crudely drawn, painted in primary colours and animated like a child’s story, Kevin Spencer recounts the trials and tribulations of youth.

Kissing My Puppet

The “PG” puppet film with the “Adult” ending: Taylor Peach, puppeteer, is unexpectedly visited by Kate Myers – his former high- school obsession – who’s seeking help for a mysterious “puppet emergency.” The emergency is Buford, a pissed-off polar-bear puppet from Taylor’s past who, like Taylor’s puppet pal Owen, is not really a puppet at all. Buford’s revenge destroys Taylor’s attempts to charm Kate but, in the aftermath of extreme embarrassment, Taylor learns a secret about Kate.

This enticing comedy evokes the glory days of vaudeville, with its crazy goings-on, quick-witted dialogue and abundant laughter. The show’s colourful stock characters deal with everyday life and its multitude of minor preoccupations – preoccupations which, taken to their extreme, become caricatures of our own social habits and shortcomings.

Lance et compte : nouvelle génération

Fifteen years have passed… whatever happened to Pierre Lambert, Marc Gagnon and Gilles Guilbault? The characters we knew and loved so well return in Lance et Compte : nouvelle génération. Le National, still in Québec City, is doing badly, so the team’s managers call in the old-timers – hoping they’ll inspire the young, millionaire players with a passion for the game. The series also follows the life of a new star, Danny Bouchard.

Last Band on the Planet (The)

The Last Band on the Planet is a musical science-fiction comedy series about a misfit band of singers endowed with bizarre superpowers who are pursued by aliens. Bewildered, bumbling, and constantly brawling, this super-group departs on a concert tour and becomes embroiled in a series of misadventures – inadvertently righting wrongs, evading death, crushing evil, and ultimately saving the world – more by accident than by any super-heroism.

Liography

Liography is a half-hour satirical comedy series that sends up the cult of celebrity by parodying biography television. Leslie Nielsen, the hugely popular international comedy film actor, stars in the role of the Peter Graves-inspired host and narrator, Terrence Brynne McKennie. Each week he introduces us to famous people who don’t exist – but who remind us of someone who does. Their stories are told through mock interviews with characters who know our subjects, and by the subjects themselves.

Machos VII (Les)

The stars of this soap opera are the kind of ordinary 30- to 50-year old men and women one meets in everyday life. The show resolutely assumes that male-female relationships are better today than they were in the past, despite the blame and often-unfulfilled expectations that continue to characterize relationships between men and women.

Made in Canada III

Richard is in hot water again. Held prisoner in the middle of a war zone, his helicopter crashes and everyone at Pyramid Productions assumes he’s dead. However, opportunity knocks and Richard returns, just in time to save Pyramid from its sinking share price and mounting bad press. At Pyramid, it’s business as usual: corporate boot camps, anatomically correct Damacles dolls, prison dramas, all-protein diets and staff morale that’s in the toilet.

Set in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Pipedreams is about “hosers” – rural and working class Canadians. MacLeod, a laconic Cape Bretoner, has invited Patricia, a high-born British barrister, to stay with him as she awaits a trial for negligence following a car accident which killed both her despised husband and MacLeod’s beloved wife. Patricia is forced to wait around, however, as the longest-running snowstorm in local history delays the trial indefinitely.

Radio Active III

Thanks to its innovative approach to learning, this comedy aimed at 11- to 15-year olds is part of the curriculum at Upper Rawdon High School. The show deals with themes intended to appeal to the particular tastes of adolescents and builds upon issues they are familiar with — school, friends, personal and social pressures — all with a comic twist.

Radio Enfer VI

Four high-school students from different socio-economic backgrounds team up to run their school’s radio station. In addition to making sure that everything runs smoothly at the station, the teens must successfully juggle their studies, family obligations and social life. The group doesn’t always see eye to eye: personality conflicts make working together difficult, not to say explosive. But this tension drives the show’s comic moments, which arise as much from the inherently funny situations as from the clashes among the characters.

Rain

Laced with metaphor, Rain is a moving tale about the complexities of love and the journey toward understanding, forgiveness and, ultimately, joy. It is the struggle between a brother and his younger sister as they each try to create their own way of being while playing a game of hide and seek. Through the eyes of children we find a deeper understanding of the human struggle to gain acceptance from those we love. Set entirely in a beautiful countryside, the surreal and magical quality of the children’s world is enhanced by visually rich images and a provocative soundtrack.

Set in the early 1800s, Random Passage traces the incredible journey of Mary Bundle – from indentured service in England to the squalor of rough-and-tumble St. John’s, Newfoundland. After being banished by her employer following an attempted rape, and later abandoned by the father of her child, Mary and her infant daughter move on to the comparative shelter offered by the remote outport of Cape Random. There she encounters a rich variety of challenging situations and fascinating characters.

Rivière-des-Jérémie

Maxime Legendre, a city dweller in his early thirties, has always led a charmed life. Suddenly, however, he encounters a number of setbacks and eventually finds himself taking a job as head of a small hydroplane company, FishAir Service, located in the village of Rivière-des-Jérémie. The village – with its peculiar ways and even stranger inhabitants – lies at the heart of this comedy of manners, which also has its share of action, mystery, danger, friendship and, of course, love.

Torso

Hamilton, "Steel Town," 1947. Across the lake from the dirty smokestacks, two boys on a hike make a gruesome discovery: a hacked-up male torso. It’s John Dick, streetcar conductor, husband of the staggeringly beautiful and, by her own admission, promiscuous 26-year-old Evelyn. Sentenced more for her reputation than the crime itself, Evelyn fights alone until lawyer J. J. Robinette takes her case. He discovers something about Evelyn that no one else has seen, and comes to believe that she deserves a chance.

Trick or Treat

Trick or Treat tells the story of Mike, a teen who has just been “taxed” by bullies at school. In order to protect himself against further harassment, he decides to obtain a gun from a small-time gangster. Marseille Trilogy (The)

The Marseille Trilogy was inspired by the writings of Marcel Pagnol, particularly the three works that brought him fame: the plays Marius and Fanny, and the feature film César. An epic story covering three generations, the trilogy is marked by love, hate, betrayal, bitterness – and, ultimately, reunion and happiness. These themes combine and intertwine to produce an emotionally rich and complex viewing experience.

Willie

This story about the life of Quebec country music star Willie Lamothe unfolds like a road movie. Accompanied by his wife Jeannette, Willie, suffering from ill health, leaves his Florida home for Montréal, where he is to receive an award. During the long trip, Willie reflects on his life – the early days, a very successful career – and comes to the realization that he has never had a close relationship with either his wife or his children.
