100 Québécois qui ont fait le XXe siècle

100 Québécois qui ont fait le XXe siècle looks at the lives of major figures who helped shape Quebec society during the last century. What did these important men and women achieve, and how and why did they do so? In answering these questions, the series also explores the role of the “hero” throughout history: Is not a hero someone who serves as an instrument of collective will, channeling a force much stronger than him- or herself?

1701 The Great Peace of Montreal

In 1701, Montréal was the site of the Great Peace, a pact between the French and some 40 Native nations. Although the treaty helped foster development in the New World, it also entailed the strategic withdrawal of the Native nations, a policy aimed at ensuring their survival. How do things stand today, some 300 years later? This documentary examines the contemporary repercussions of the historic treaty through the eyes of Native people.

Art d'être parent II (L')

Becoming a parent is about creating new life and watching that life evolve into something unique. It’s about forging a new relationship into which you pour all your desires, ambitions, beliefs, intuitions and emotions. Being a parent also involves learning how to avoid laying down your brush before the work is finished – finding the courage to keep working until your “art” no longer needs your attention, until your child is ready, in turn, to undertake his own act of creation.

Artiste dans l'âme

This documentary series features 26 Canadian artists. In each installment, two artists exchange one of their works and reinterpret it according to their own personal styles. Offering insight into the creative process, each program attempts to demystify and de-mythologize the artist. The series invites us to briefly share in the artist’s life, allowing us to both “see” and “hear” the world through the artist’s very soul.

Canadians: Biographies of a Nation (East) (The)

These biographies look at the lives of three influential Canadians. Samuel Cunard was the Halifax shipping magnate who founded the Cunard Line, the first company to schedule trans-Atlantic passenger service. Moses Coady, a Cape Breton priest, created the Antigonish movement and spread the ideals of the co-op movement through Atlantic Canada and the world. Sir Sandford Fleming, Chief Engineer and Surveyor of the Canadian Pacific Railway, championed the adoption of international standard time.

Canadians: Biographies of a Nation (West) (The)

Four distinguished but little-known Canadians are profiled in this series of biographies. Artist Robert Markle emerged as an exceptional painting teacher in the 1960s; Marion de Chastelain shuttled vital enemy secrets during World War II; Fred Rose was a labour activist and MP who battled anti-semitism in the 1940s; Czech-born actor and filmmaker Vladimir Valenta survived six political regimes – and one Oscar-winning film. All four profiles provide intimate glimpses into noteworthy but often unheralded lives.

Ceux qui attendent

After centuries of peaceful coexistence, the Acadians and the Mi’kmaq of New Brunswick found themselves, in the fall of 2000, on opposite sides of a fierce conflict over their respective share of lobster stocks. The name of the community, Burnt Church, became an international byword for Native rights. This documentary looks at both sides of the dispute, providing insight into the men and women who have lived through the events and helping us to understand what separates as well as unites the two communities.

Chiefs II

Chiefs relates the saga of the great leaders, warriors and diplomats of the First Nations whose stories form a central drama of Canada and the North American continent. A blend of documentary and dramatic re-enactment, Chiefs brings to life the power, spirit and mystery of the First Nations. The series also seeks to separate the myth from the men, to tell the story of leaders who could be at once Machiavellian, magnanimous, brilliant and brave.

Chrome and Thunder

The “biker” lifestyle is a rapidly growing subculture for millions of men and women around the world. Some are drawn by the romanticism of biker culture, seeing it as a symbol of power, freedom and rebellion. For many others, biker culture evokes fear because of its association with drugs, organized crime and violence. What is the truth? Who are today’s “bikers”? Chrome and Thunder is a unique and unsentimental video odyssey into the biker world.

Untamed Canada

Western Canada is home to an abundant variety of wildlife. It is the land of grizzly bear and bison, wolf and majestic moose, a place where the industrious beaver builds spectacular dams and lives side-by-side with the ferocious and legendary wolverine as well as the puma, perhaps the most successful predator in the feline world.

Circus II

This series follows the Garden Bros. Circus during its 2001 tour, capturing all the drama and excitement of life onstage – and backstage. The performers work and live together and, in many cases, their lives depend on each other. The work they do is difficult and, above all, dangerous. Circus provides real insight into this chaotic, usually hidden world — with eye-catching, often breathtaking vignettes, rich in character and full of thrills, humour, frustration, daring and emotion.

Conquête du podium : rêve ou cauchemar (La)

In today’s world of sports, athletes are placing greater and greater importance on medal-winning – perhaps too much importance, say some. This documentary explores all aspects of this phenomenon – training, psychological conditioning, marketing, the media, politics and “the system.” The program also gives voice to those at the centre of the story, athletes and their families.

Crossing Bridges

Mozart’s 41st symphony, The Jupiter, provides the musical backbone for this provocative documentary chronicling a Middle East concert tour by Israeli-born maestro Pinchas Zukerman and Canada’s National Arts Centre Orchestra. Originally slated to include stops in Jordan and the Palestinian town of Ramallah, the tour was shortened due to the latest outbreak of Middle East violence. Crossing Bridges is a moving testament to the dedication of the various artists involved and the bridges that remain to be crossed in the ongoing quest for peace.

Culture dans tous ses états IV (La)

This series looks at the evolution of Quebec culture. In Québec en ondes, Nicole Giguère examines radio broadcasting, which continues to flourish. In Vie de famille, Mario Desmarais explores the cultural and social impact of television, while in Les Conteurs de vues animées, Richard Jutras discusses Quebec film – in which dialogue takes precedence over action. Finally, in Temps hybrides, Brigitte Nadeau celebrates the way cultures are mixing together.

De Huron à Wendat

In 1980, Denis Boivin, a young filmmaker, shot a documentary – which was never released – about the Huron Village near Québec City. Boivin returns to meet the proud Huron, who now call themselves the Wendat. What has become of these Native people’s quest for individual and collective identity? De Huron à Wendat explores the complex notion of belonging, as well as the unique form of democracy of the Wendat, who have been profoundly marked by the loss of their traditional language and the effects of mixed marriage.

Debout les comiques

This series explores and dissects the phenomenon of comedy in Quebec. Each installment looks at a particular aspect of the comedy industry: radio comedy; burlesque; comedy for women, young people and night owls; comedy of the absurd; comedy which provokes; and, finally, laughter in all its manifestations. Debout les comiques proves that Quebec comedy is unique in terms of its vitality, range and scope.

Depression and its impact can literally be seen in the brain through sophisticated imaging techniques, and mapping the brain’s chemical and biological changes could unlock the secrets of the disease. Depression: Fighting the Dragon follows several patients through different kinds of treatment, documents how their brains look before and after therapy, and explores the implications of this research for treating a disease that is growing more common with every passing generation.

Drames et bonheurs d'occasion

This docu-drama series follows several young social workers who work on the streets of Montréal’s south-shore suburbs. The enthusiastic young men and women, faced with the daily reality of life on the streets, are the only tangible link between the street youths and the resources available to them. The series’ true and moving stories are ones that these urban humanitarians live through every day.

With One Heart - The Fight Against Ebola

Ebola War - The Nurses of Gulu tells the story of Ugandan nurses who volunteered to combat Uganda’s first Ebola outbreak in October 2000. An international team of medical professionals, including Canadian doctor Bonnie Henry, was also sent to Uganda to help contain the outbreak. Complicating the situation was Uganda’s 15-year-old war with northern-based rebels. Despite the deaths of their colleagues, discrimination and inadequate medical supplies, the nurses persevered, saving hundreds, if not thousands, of lives.

École de danse

Every week, a group of men and women take ballroom dancing lessons at a school in Montreal’s Rosemont district. They come together to ease their loneliness and isolation, to find a kindred spirit, to overcome shyness, or to fulfill a burning desire to dance. We follow the men and women, from first tentative step to grand finale, as they grow as dancers and as a group.

Entre père et fils

Entre père et fils explores the father-son relationship. Researchers have recently begun studying the role played by fathers in shaping the fundamental character of their sons. In addition, the very concept of masculinity is being redefined, causing men to re-examine, not only what it means to be a man, but to be a father as well. Increasingly, men are paying more attention to the concept of fatherhood. This documentary explores all aspects of this fascinating topic.

Esprit des lieux (L')

There are places that are wild and unspoiled; there are places that have been altered by man; there are sacred places, and profane places; there are animal sanctuaries and animal markets. L’esprit des lieux looks at the spaces we have been given: how we “interpret” them, how we live in them, how we imagine them and, of course, how we have changed them. An exploration of Canadian spaces.

Filière canadienne (La)

In this series, reporter Jean-Pierre Charbonneau investigates Canada’s criminal underworld. Each episode brings us stories in which danger, fear, corruption and violence – as well as the underlying lure of money and power – figure prominently. From Marseille’s perfume trade, to Montréal’s red-light district during the 1950s, to New York City’s Little Italy, the series explores the international web of organized crime.

Finding Our Talk II

According to Statistics Canada, only three of the 50 most prominent Aboriginal languages are expected to survive through this century. These are tough statistics, but it doesn’t have to be that way. People all across Canada are fighting to beat the odds. It’s a remarkable story. The second season of this series celebrates the success of people and organizations who are reclaiming their language – as well as their culture, their stories and their very existence as a people.

Firedance

Firedance is about the fusion of two dance forms – Kathak of India and flamenco of Spain. We are dazzled by the performances of Toronto dancers Joanna Das and Esmeralda Enrique, by their footwork and the rhythms of tabla and guitar. Probing into the historical roots of the dances, the film reveals that flamenco sprang from the classical form of Kathak, brought into Europe by the gypsies of India.

Firestorm: The Fire Suspension Paradox

Fifty years of “all-out-war” against forest fires has had a profound effect. With the advent of technology, firefighters have gained the upper hand in a battle to control nature. But there’s a catch. By suppressing wildfires that would have cleared the underbrush, we have created a powder keg of unburned fuel. A powder keg ready to explode… in firestorms that no amount of human effort and technology can control.

Fisrt Person Shooter

You are woken by gunfire. You move down the hall to your teenage son’s room and hear the words, “Gotcha, yeah, 40 kills, take that.” On the screen there is mass carnage, blood and bodies everywhere – and it’s your son doing the killing, enjoying every minute of it. First Person Shooter examines the disintegration of one family as the result of video-game addiction and looks at the battle between the $12-billion computer-game industry and morally outraged parents and activists.

Fougues gaspésiennes

The filmmakers involved in this documentary d’auteur hail from the Gaspé region of Quebec – either by birth or by choice – and all have paid tribute to or promoted the region in their art, music or public service. Although a celebration of the Gaspé, Fougues gaspésiennes is a concept that can appeal to all Canadians, as every region of Canada has its own committed and devoted artists, fiercely proud of their native soil.

Told from the perspectives of a local cop, an outlaw biker and an opportunistic business woman, the film provides a gently comic portrait of the conflicts dividing the town, played out against the backdrop of civic disorder, police operations and thousands of bikers who invade Port Dover every year.

InTOLLERance

Toller Cranston was utterly unlike any other figure skater of his time. Both on and off the ice, he was an individualist who wasn’t afraid to be different – and who wasn’t afraid to speak his mind. Intollerance looks at the life of a mercurial man and his remarkable achievements: Olympic medallist; three-time world free-skating champion; Canadian Athlete of the Year; internationally renowned painter, illustrator, author, designer and choreographer; commentator and star of award-winning television specials and films.

Je danse ma vie

By dancing with my experiences, I accept without judging everything that life brings – I am in tune with my emotions. This way, I find a way to cope with what affects me and I act in harmony with who I am. Whether exercising control or letting go, I choose to look at obstacles from a different perspective by seeking the opportunity behind the problem. Je danse ma vie – I dance my life: it’s all about attitude.

A Madman's Diary

“If this isn’t Hell, it’s the next best thing to being there….” Filmmaker Mark Blandford talks about the debilitating depression that he suffered several years ago. He looks at mental illness from within and from without, and examines a number of issues: the sense of despair; the taboo which surrounds mental illness, making it seem as if it were something shameful; the importance of family and loved ones; treatment and cure, which restore happiness and inner peace.

Juchitan des folles

Located on the border with Guatemala, the Mexican town of Juchitan is home to the Zapotec Indians, who have shown remarkable tolerance towards homosexuals. According to legend, the patron saint of Juchitan carried a bag filled with “queers” on his back. Everywhere he travelled – Colombia, Central America, Guatemala – he left behind a homosexual. In Juchitan, however, his bag came undone, and they all fell out at once….
