A IS FOR ATTILA

Through a dazzling streak of work that rocked the art world for nearly 15 years, Canadian Attila Richard Lukacs became one of the world’s most infamous painters. Likened to Rembrandt, Lukacs was also reviled by Christians for painting skinhead fags in the Garden of Eden. Told from director David Vaisbord’s point of view, A is for Attila explores Lukacs’s mental and physical landscape, providing an original and uncensored perspective on the artist’s personal life.

ALMOST HOME

In 1972, five young film students made a documentary about the Sayisi Dene, an Aboriginal band in northern Canada that had been forcibly relocated from their ancestral home 20 years earlier. Today, the students, now seasoned filmmakers, revisit these people as they struggle to put their tragic past behind them. The film explores their efforts to keep their values and traditions in balance with the realities of the 21st century.

ANGAQUIIT: SHAMAN STORIES

The last shamans in the Igloolik region of Canada's Eastern Arctic – the grandparents and great-grandparents, both men and women, of Inuit living today –are known through local oral history and the journals of Knud Rasmussen and the early missionaries. This film examines their lives as healers, spirit mediators, ceremonial leaders and interpreters of the elaborate Inuit spiritual philosophy in the period when Christian missionaries first arrived in the Eastern Arctic and changed the Inuit way of life.

ART D'ÊTRE PARENT III (L')

Being a parent is like being an artist, though it’s not about having the right technique or having an innate talent. Parenting is about helping create new life and watching that life evolve into something unique as you contribute your desires, ambitions, beliefs, emotions and intuition. Being a parent also involves learning how to avoid laying down your brush before the work is finished – finding the courage to keep working until the “art” no longer needs your attention, until your child is ready, in turn, to undertake his own act of creation.

AU PAYS DU MADAWASKA SÉRIE FRANCOPHONIE CANADIENNE

This documentary looks at the relationship between the people of the Madawaskan and Acadian regions, in New Brunswick. Most of the featured subjects are Madawaskan. They discuss their home and its distinctiveness, as well as their sometimes harmonious, sometimes strained relationship with Acadians. The documentary segments are interspersed with excerpts from playwright Rino Morin Rossignol’s play Le Pique-Nique, which adds a touch of humour and irony to the subject.

AVROCAR! SAUCER SECRETS FROM THE PAST

This documentary combines the most compelling elements of political and aviation history. The 1950s were a time of global unrest, and the race for space was on. Designed by Canadians and funded by Americans, the Avrocar was essentially a flying saucer whose aim was to serve as a deterrent to unwanted visitors, be they Communists or extraterrestrials. During a time of widespread paranoia, the Avrocar became an international object of desire.

KISS (THE)

The kiss takes viewers on an incredible voyage of discovery into the very nature of the kiss, as depicted in works of art from different art-historical periods. In order to bring the public closer to art, the film focuses on the public itself, its emotions, its experiences. This is achieved through the onscreen presence of a character who serves as a link between art and the viewer. A kiss, whether it is given, received, accepted or refused, leaves an indelible mark on us all.

BELONGING

Does a stockbroker on Wall Street have something in common with a peasant in Uganda? Can a marginalized, urban homeless person relate to a suburban housewife in Nashville? Based on the prophetic counter-cultural ideas of Jean Vanier, Belonging confronts individuals from around the world – rich and poor, weak and strong – with the same questions: “What is your greatest desire? And what makes you feel you belong?” Poignant and memorable, Belonging celebrates the dignity and diversity of humanity.

C.D. HOY: PORTRAITS FROM THE FRONTIER

Photographer Chow Dong Hoy moved from China to rural British Columbia at the turn of the last century. During an era when most photographers depicted Canada's Aboriginal people as "noble savages", Hoy was advancing the art of ethnographic photography by creating haunting portraits of Aboriginal peoples and their interactions with encroaching settlers. This film draws upon an extraordinary archive of photographs and film footage to document the life and art of Chow Dong Hoy.

ÇA CLIQUE !

Drawing on real-life experiences, Ça clique looks at mentoring in the Native communities of Quebec. Under mentoring, an older guide takes a younger "protégé" under his wing in order to help him succeed in life. Mentoring is an important personal experience which benefits all those involved in the process: not only the protégé and the mentor, but those in their circle, who listen and, in turn, also emerge wiser as a result of the experience.

CELESTA FOUND

Celesta Found was inspired by the accidental discovery of a cardboard box in an abandoned log cabin in the Eastern Townships of Quebec. The box contained paper, scraps, grocery lists, funeral notices, tax receipts, and seven diaries – all dating from the years between 1895 and 1916. Through these artifacts, the film draws us into the life of a woman who lived and died in an earlier century, a woman who, day by day, wrote herself into consciousness – and into the future.

CRUCIFIED SOLDIER

On April 24, 1915 a Canadian soldier was found crucified against a barn door at St-Julien, near Ypres in France. The “Crucified Soldier” caused international outrage. A post-war investigation by the British Government declared the account untrue, claiming it was nothing more than a myth of the trenches and war propaganda. Now, more than eight decades later, new evidence turns the myth back into reality and reveals the identity of the Crucified Soldier.

CULTURE DANS TOUS SES ÉTATS V (LA)

This three part series examines the evolution of Quebec culture. Vive le Québec… anglé ! explores the unique outlook of the English community, which lives and works in an environment where its language and identity are continually being called into question. Dans l’oreille du monde looks at the introduction of the art of song to Quebec, an art which has firmly taken root. Sculpte-moi un arbre is an unashamedly opinionated guide to the vibrant art of sculpture.

DAUGHTERS OF AFGHANISTAN

This documentary looks at the efforts to rebuild Afghanistan’s infrastructure and culture, as seen through the eyes of women, such as former Deputy Prime Minister Sima Samar, whose fight for education and health-care rights for women and girls put them in danger. Having survived the Taliban, they are putting their lives back together. Their story is told by Canadian journalist Sally Armstrong, who sounded the alarm about their hideous plight.

DEAR JULIET

In the early 1930s, letters began arriving in the small Italian city of Verona, addressed simply to “Juliet of Verona.” A caretaker took an interest, and began replying on Juliet's behalf. Word got out that Juliet was alive and well, and the small stream of letters began to steadily increase. Dear Juliet explores the extraordinary phenomenon of the Juliet correspondence, through the eloquence and poetry of the letters and the impassioned women who endeavour to keep the myth of Juliet alive.

DEATHLY SILENCE (A)

On May 17th, 2001, 24-year-old Segun Farquharson was shot and murdered 50 feet from his mother’s home. Segun’s murder was part of an outbreak of violence in Toronto over the past six years that has claimed the lives of more than 125 black men – men killed by other young black men. A Deathly Silence is the first-hand account of a single murder and its effect on the victim’s family. It is also a search to understand why black youth are killing each other and how the community is coping with the escalating violence.

DES ABEILLES ET DES HOMMES

Bees, the only insects to be domesticated by man, are “social” creatures, and their relationship with humans is rich and complex. This documentary looks at the unceasing and valuable work performed by bees. We know, of course, that bees produce honey and wax; what we may not know is that they were the first to produce mead, one of the world’s oldest alcoholic beverages.

DES BÊTES ET DES HOMMES

Des bêtes et des hommes offers a frank, inquisitive and often unexpected look at the relationship between humans and animals. The series asks us to reconsider our understanding of animal behaviour so that we might better understand ourselves. While remaining faithful to the style of traditional documentaries about animals, the series takes a somewhat more personal approach to the genre.

DES HISTOIRES D'ALCOOL

Since time immemorial, alcohol has played a major role in human affairs. While the alcohol industry has always been highly lucrative, it has also been illicit and/or disreputable, sometimes forced underground, depending on the prevailing moral attitudes of a given historical period. This fascinating series looks at the history of alcohol in Quebec from the start of the 20th century to the present day.

DES QUÉBÉCOIS AU FRONT, DES CANADIENS AU FRONT

This four-part series tells the often-shattering stories of men and women who have experienced the horrors of war. The four documentary films – Fugitifs et déserteurs, Femmes d’action, Les Prisonniers d’Hitler and Saïgon P.Q. – describe not only the hell of war but the expressions of hope and courage that emerged during wartime, as revealed by the touching, often surprising testimonies of the documentaries’ subjects.

DESSINE-MOI UN TATTOO

To try to understand the personality and motivations of the tattooed or the tattooist; to explore the historical, social and cultural context from where both are issued, is like visiting a familiar territory charted by maps, symbols and references yet to be deciphered. One feels the same excitement as an archeologist unearthing a tablet in an unknown language.

DESTINY: LIFE AND TIMES OF PAUL ANKA

"I believe that Paul will be the biggest star with an overall career that this world has ever known." – Irving Feld, 1962. Paul Anka’s manager made these extravagant predictions almost a lifetime ago – but more of the hype has come true than anyone expected. Since leaving Ottawa at 15, Anka has sustained a top-50 recording career for five decades. In April 2002, he performed in Ottawa for the first time in more than 20 years. Both his personal and professional lives are returning to their beginnings.

DISASTERS OF THE CENTURY IV

Too often, disasters from our past are relegated to a few paragraphs in history books. We don't realize that many of those who lost their lives in these disasters helped pave the way for new laws, safer travel, and better early-warning devices. Each episode of Disasters of the Century goes beyond the headlines and brings to life two disasters. Using actual disaster footage, photographs, gripping re-creations and survivors' terrifying memories, the series delves into a world few live to talk about.

DON BURNSTICK - "YOU MIGHT BE A REDSKIN"

Don Burnstick is one of North America’s funniest and most talented Aboriginal communicators. At an early age, Don, a Cree from Alexander First Nation in Alberta, was asked to leave by his elders: his destructive lifestyle was too much for the community. It wasn’t until Don hit rock bottom that he made a decision to turn his life around. Today, he travels across North America teaching and healing through laughter. His "live" routine combines his real-life experience with the ironic comedy that permeates First Nations culture.

EDGAR CHRISTIAN : LOST ON THE BARRENS

In the winter of 1926, 18-year-old Edgar Christian and an ill-prepared team undertook a fateful expedition to the Canadian Arctic. Their tragic story springs from the detailed diary that Christian wrote during the voyage. It is a story of blind trust and devotion, and pride and arrogance versus the unforgiving elements of nature. Christian’s expedition is recreated by three modern adventurers who canoe and snowshoe into the heart of the “Barren Ground.”

ENTRE PÈRE ET FILS

What does a father do? What role do today's men want to play in the lives of their children? What kind of fathers do they want to be? In trying to answer these important questions, this film explores issues in the father-son relationship and examines the redefinition of fatherhood – which is having such an impact on both men and women. This is a vital and timely inquiry now that, more than ever, the well-being and future of boys is at stake.

Neither voyeuristic, pitying nor mocking, this documentary profiles a man who has experienced the worst that life has to offer, and who yet continues to forge ahead when most of us would have long given up.

FAUT-TU QUE JE TUE MON PÈRE ?

Along the rocky shores of Quebec’s Upper Gaspé region, six youths, for whom nothing appears to be going right, struggle against forces seemingly beyond their control. Having recently returned home, a young filmmaker listens to what the youths have to say. Aware that she and the youths have all strayed, in some way, from their paths, the filmmaker – a woman in her early thirties – takes the opportunity to examine her own life as she casts an anthropological eye on a forgotten corner of North America. Y faut-tu que je tue mon père ? is a documentary d’auteur driven by a sense of urgency.

END OF THE VOICE (THE), Chamber Music Collection X

Giacomo Puccini was probably the last major composer in the long tradition of Italian opera. The End of the Voice recounts Puccini's life and work through documentary vignettes as well as dramatic re-enactments inspired by old movies and choreographed to music for voice and piano. We learn about his Bohemian life in Milan, the creation of his greatest operas, his love life – which ended tragically –and his political involvements, particularly with Fascism.

FREE TRADE IS KILLING MY MOTHER

Free Trade Is Killing My Mother is an idiosyncratic and revealing documentary told from inside the anti-globalization revolution. Shot from the hip on Mini DV, intercut with stock footage, it traces the filmmakers’ Roger & Me-style journey to the Québec City Summit, in spring 2001, their encounters with protesters high and low, and their attempts to comprehend and join the revolution.

FROM GRIEF TO ACTION

From Grief to Action chronicles 17 months in the lives of four middle-class Vancouver families whose children are addicted to hard drugs. FROM NEW AGE TO NEW EDGE

Can we really change the world without changing ourselves? From New Age to New Edge explores this question as it travels to the remote rainforests of western Canada, where a revolution is in the making. Here, the face of environmental activism is going through radical changes as it dovetails with the personal-growth movement. So far, it’s been a winning combination, keeping chainsaws away from one of the planet’s largest remaining stands of old-growth forest.

FRONTIERS OF CONSTRUCTION IV

Frontiers of Construction is a show about building for tomorrow. The series takes its audience on a trip to the most modern, technologically complicated construction projects in the world – where the future is being built in concrete and sand. Each episode focuses on a single engineering specialty and introduces us to visionaries with grand designs for our future – sometimes mad, sometimes utopian, and sometimes surprisingly realistic.

GALILEO'S SONS

Galileo's Sons is a documentary film about the only community of astrophysicists in the world who are theologians and philosophers: the Jesuits of the Vatican Observatory. This is a journey from old world to new, from these Jesuits' headquarters in the Papal Summer Palace south of Rome to their advanced telescope on a mountain above the Arizona desert, and from Galileo's trial to the overwhelming implications of modern science for our understanding of God.

GENERATION OF HATE

At the end of September 2002, and on the eve of a possible U.S. invasion, award-winning filmmaker Shelley Saywell travelled to Iraq to take the pulse of ordinary Iraqis and explore what a full-scale conflict could mean to the country, the region and the world. Generation of Hate shows these realities through the eyes and the voices of ordinary people, especially the young who will determine the future of the country.

GENUINE ARTICLE (THE)

For three days in November the fiercest competition in the Canadian legal profession rages not in the courtrooms, but in the towers of Bay Street, Toronto. The prize is not winning a case, but winning law students. The Genuine Article follows one Bay Street law firm and three law students through this courting ritual. The pace is hectic, the schedule frantic and, for both the firms and students, the stakes are as high as they get.

GÉRARD THIBAULT DANS LES RUES DE QUÉBEC

During the 1950s and 1960s, all the great French chansonniers from Europe and Quebec who performed in Québec City – stars such as Brel, Brassens, Trenet, Piaf, Vigneault and others – rubbed shoulders with club owner Gérard Thibault. Thibault’s Chez Gérard was the place for the stars to hang out in. This documentary captures an era in music history and profiles a man who, from behind the scenes, played a key role in the development of French song.

GHOST OF LOMAKO

This adventure documentary goes in search of the vanishing Bonobos apes, whose habitat is restricted to a small area of the war-torn Democratic Republic of Congo, a country that is trying to return from the brink of annihilation. The human-like Bonobos, whose anatomy resembles that of “Lucy,” the most famous of the pre-humanoid hominids, walk more like humans than apes. Estimates now suggest that there are only 10,000 Bonobos in existence, the victims of a war that has devastated the Congo.
