1604

A docudrama based on the experiences of real-life individuals, 1604 tells the story of the first attempts by the French to settle North America, first on Saint Croix Island and then at Port-Royal. Told through the eyes of Guillaume, a young French settler, and Nagoeg, a beautiful Native girl who becomes his companion, 1604 introduces such historical figures as De Monts, Champlain, Poutrincourt and Lescarbot and captures the sweeping emotion, excitement and tragedy that marked this thrilling moment in history.

902 (THE)

Hip hop to most is booty-shaking, Lexus-driving, gun-toting, colours-waving, bass-heavy Black music. Turn that racket down! Not all hip hop is the same. In Nova Scotia, hip hop is made to the old school rules, where a group of DJs and MCs have become a kind of biological control experiment: preserving the Golden Age of hip hop while infusing their music with innovative local traditions. The results are powerful lyrics and an unstoppable beat that is beginning to be heard around the world.

À LA UNE

Newspapers, dailies as well as weeklies, hold a mirror up to society and open a window both onto ourselves and the world beyond. À la une looks at 10 French-language newspapers published in different regions of Canada. The series juxtaposes each newspaper with another Canadian or foreign newspaper, thereby illustrating the various ways in which information is handled, each periodical presenting its own particular view of the world.

ABORIGINAL ARCHITECTURE, LIVING ARCHITECTURE

Aboriginal Architecture, Living Architecture explores the way Aboriginal architecture reflects the diversity of environments and Aboriginal cultures across North America. Traditional and ceremonial buildings reflect all aspects of life in a particular region and time. Architectural designs were affected by technology, climate, society, religion, economics and history. The film looks at how Aboriginal architecture continues to evolve in response to on-going changes in the natural and social environment.

ACCROS DE L'ANACHRONISME (LES)

They are young or old, girls or boys, men or women. They all lead double lives. One day, they are geologists, students or mechanics; the next day, they are members of a militia, or bishops, or poachers. One day, they live in the 20th century, and the next morning they wake up in the 14th century. They are not actors, nor patients in an insane asylum. They are hooked on the anachronistic...

AMOUR AU XXI e SIÈCLE (L')

Today, love has freed itself of societal constraints. Forms of love that were once forbidden or deemed scandalous - living out of wedlock, gay and lesbian love, the love between younger men and older women - are today more prevalent and "normal." This documentary takes a journey into the different stages of love: the birth of a child, the fruit of love; the emotional lives of children (at age 10, some children experience true, passionate love); the ups and downs of teen crushes; a person's first "real" relationship; love in relationships that have lasted for decades; unusual love affairs, which are surprising but real; and the end of love. What happens between the end of one relationship and the start of a new one.

APPEL DU LARGE (L')

During the 19th century, the vast plains of Manitoba were the birthplace of a unique francophone people, the Métis. Born of the encounter between coureurs de bois and Native women, the Métis dominated the region and were instrumental in the creation of Manitoba as a Canadian province. What the Métis built, however, was dramatically destroyed over the course of the 20th century, and Métis influence quickly declined. Nevertheless, French Manitoba survived as a result of quiet resistance - an existence which forged the Métis character. During the 1960s, pulled one way by the dream of an independent Quebec and another way by the idea of a bilingual Canada, a Franco-Manitoban identity emerged. Today, while it is true that Franco-Manitobans are small in number, their culture - strongly influenced by 19th-century values of mixed-race unions and of tolerance - lies at the heart of the Canadian identity.

ART D'ÊTRE PARENT IV (L')

Being a parent is like being an artist, though it's not about having the right technique or having an innate talent. Parenting is about helping create new life and watching that life evolve into something unique, and fully engaging your desires, ambitions, beliefs, emotions and intuition. Being a parent also involves learning how to avoid laying down your brush before the task is finished - finding the courage to hang on to your work until your child is ready, in turn, to engage in his own act of creation.

SPIRITED ARTISTS IV

Spirited Artists IV profiles 12 Canadian artists. Each instalment focuses on two artists who exchange one art work each and then interpret the work from their unique point of view. The camera, a privileged witness to this creative process, casts an intimate eye on the proceedings, managing to demystify as well as demythologize the artist by exploring his interior life. The series is a wonderful opportunity for viewers to meet talented artists who are engaged in shaping our collective imagination. A cinematographic journey about similarity and difference which enables us to "see" and "hear" with the eyes of the soul.

BEING DOROTHY

If Dorothy were alive today, what would her dreams be made of? Being Dorothy focuses on the lives of the young women in Kansas who are employed as part-time "Dorothys" in The Land of Oz display of the Seward County Historical Museum. Even though Dorothy Gale was swept away somewhere over the rainbow more than 60 years ago, her story symbolizes the voyage that every teenager in North America must live through as they take their first tentative steps away from the protective cocoon of home.

Dramatic and emotionally charged, the vérité-style series follows the real-life experiences of pregnancy for a wide range of women. Birth Stories charts the weeks leading up to the birth and the intensity and emotion of the birth itself. The series chronicles diverse stories of young and not-so-young couples, determined teens and gay parents-to-be over the course of several episodes.

BUMP AND GRIND

In the Wild West, strippers like Kitty travel from club to club, city to city, in search of big money - thousands of dollars a week. It's hard to give up, though Kitty, like many dancers, has to hide her profession from the world, even from her family. In Bump and Grind, Kitty, Sindy, and other dancers take us backstage at three Western strip bars. But the days of fancy stage shows may soon be finished.

THAT'S FUNNY! - INUIT MITTATIIN

Humour in Inuit culture is as unique as the Arctic is in Canada. Inuit humour is often extremely difficult to capture. Whereas in southern Canada whole industries are devoted to humour and comedy - which audiences can easily consume - northern humour is more elusive, a part of everyday life, present in the intimate details of mundane routines. This series captures the unique and funny side of communities throughout Nunavut.

In its second season, the series' young hosts, Cosette and Aimé, assisted by a team of experts, explore geographical phenomena from a historical perspective. In so doing, the series helps young viewers think about the relationship between humans and the environment.

CANADA'S BUTTERFLY: MARIA PELLEGRINI

The sultry soprano has suffered and survived for more than three decades in the competitive, sexually charged and backstabbing world of international opera. Her rise to stardom is filled with sacrifice and heartbreak, success and failure - an ironic mirroring of some of the tragic roles she has performed on stage.

CHILDHOOD LOST: THE STORY OF CANADA'S HOME CHILDREN

Childhood Lost examines the fate of the 100,000 British children shipped to Canada between 1869 and 1939 to work as indentured farm labourers. The children were part of a scheme designed to relieve Britain's overcrowded cities. Today, home children and their descendants make up 12 per cent of Canada's population. Childhood Lost tells the story of six home children as they attempt to unravel the mystery of their past.

MINGANIE CHRONICLE

Join us as we explore some of the issues and circumstances surrounding the encounters that took place between the Innu people and white fishermen, soldiers and colonists over the centuries. Seen from the Innu point of view, this documentary looks at how the Innu reacted when the first Europeans landed on their territory. The program examines the links that were forged between the two cultures and looks at their common history.

CHURCH IN TWO WORLDS (A)

A Church in Two Worlds looks at the fascinating history of the Ukrainian Catholic Church, with a focus on the Blessed Mary Church in Markova, Ukraine. This church exemplifies the oppression, determination and, finally, the liberation of the Catholic faith in Ukraine. The little church in the heart of agrarian, pre-industrialized Ukraine was burned down in 1958. A decade ago, ex-patriate Ukrainians in Canada raised funds to rebuild the church, and its bells began to toll once again.

CITIZEN BLACK

This humorous, revealing and off-beat profile is a modern day true-life story of our own Charles Foster Kane: Conrad Moffat Black. While the fictional press baron Kane was modeled on William Randolph Hearst in Orson Welles's classic Citizen Kane, Citizen Black probes the successes and failures, foibles and follies of one of the world's leading, most contentious and colourful publishers. Conrad Black and his wife, Barbara Amiel, are the toast of the media, political and high-society scenes in London, New York and Toronto. They remain a powerful force in English-language publishing and conservative politics, despite shareholder revolts and a bid to topple Lord Black from his publishing throne.

COHEN’S WAR

This is the story of a man who works within one of the most powerful and secret institutions in Canada. He believes this institution is riddled with ignorance, and consequently its activities often lead to tragedy. He believes this so profoundly he has made it his life's work to fight back. As we meet refugee lawyer M. Lee Cohen, he is in the midst of representing two people. One is a young Serbian woman who has claimed sanctuary in a local church to avoid deportation to a desperate and lawless society. The second is fighting deportation to Russia, where he risks falling into the hands of the Russian Mafia. These cases are the vehicle to explore Cohen and his nemesis, the Department of Canadian Immigration and Refugee Claims.

COMPTEUR D'OISEAUX (LE)

Located some five hours from Montréal, at the end of a seemingly endless road, lies a lake that has become a favourite gathering place for northern osprey. The lake is also home to the Fondation du Lac Villiers, run by a handful of people from the same family. The family's life is governed by the peaceful rhythms of the vast Boreal Forest that surrounds them and by the demands of life on the margins of civilization. This documentary takes us into their world.

CORPORATION (THE)

One hundred and fifty years ago, the corporation was a relatively insignificant entity. Today, it is a vivid, dramatic and pervasive presence in all our lives. Like the Church, the Monarchy and the Communist Party in other times and places, the corporation is today's dominant institution. But history humbles dominant institutions. All have been crushed, belittled or absorbed into some new order... Featuring illuminating interviews with Noam Chomsky, Michael Moore, Howard Zinn and many others, The Corporation charts the spectacular rise of an institution aimed at achieving specific economic goals as it also recounts victories against this apparently invincible force.

CYCLE OF FIRE, CYCLE OF LIFE

It was called British Columbia's most devastating natural disaster ever. In the summer of 2003, almost 1,000 fires swept through B.C.'s tinderbox interior. The fire-fighting costs alone exceeded half a billion dollars, not including property damage. What went wrong? Why has this part of Canada become such a tinderbox that no amount of human resources can conquer the conflagrations? In Cycle of Fire, Cycle of Life, one of Canada's most captivating naturalists, George Sirk, explains how the forests, fires - and our future - are entwined.

DARING TO DIE: THE STORY OF THE BLACK DEVILS

Daring to Die is the story of the First Special Service Force, a unique group of soldiers assembled in 1942 as a joint Canadian-American super commando force. All members of the unit volunteered for the Force, even though they were were told they could be sent on potential suicide missions. The Germans called them Schwartzen Teufels, or Black Devils, for their stealth and bravery, as well as for the terror their missions induced. The Black Devils were trained to do the impossible under the most difficult circumstances.

DÉFAILLANCES TECHNIQUES

When technology fails, life comes to a halt. Indeed, our world depends of technology. Today, no one is sheltered from disasters that result from technological breakdown. How do we respond in light of the fact that so much of our current technological infrastructure is aging? Citizens everywhere are asked to address these issues as never before. What kind of impact do disasters have on our lives, utterly dependent as we are on technology that we use every day? Who, in fact, really controls the technology that is meant to serve us? The increase in technology-based disasters is the result of scientific progress. Défaillances techniques explores this crucial issue.

INFORMER (THE)

Is our justice system justified in using criminals in the prosecution of other criminals? Reporter Alain Gravel addresses this controversial issue in The Informer. Viewers, like Gravel himself, are caught off guard by the arguments put forth by advocates on both sides of the issue, and biases are constantly put into question. The program offers a nuanced look at the issue, which engages the viewer's intelligence rather than his prejudices. The Informer is an auteur documentary which asks audiences to think deeply about the issues rather than take a stand on one side or another.

DÉLATEURS

This documentary series offers an innovative look at the phenomenon of informants and whistle-blowers. The series begins by looking at informing in the criminal justice system, which directly affects very few of us. Then, the series examines the issue of civic whistle-blowing, which touches a larger segment of the population: many of us may actually witness incidents of corporate or institutional malfeasance, and be called on to take a stand. Third, the series explores "everyday" informing, whereby a neighbour or work colleague denounces us for reasons good or ill. Who among us hasn't lived through this?

DES NOUVELLES DE DIEU

Quebecers who lived through the period of the "Great Darkness" during the 1940s and 1950s, a time when the Catholic Church seemed all-powerful, may be inclined to think that, today, faith, the sacred, spirituality - even religion itself - have all but disappeared. However, the belief in God persists, although the nature of this belief has radically changed, and continues to evolve. Drawing on real-life experiences, Des nouvelles de Dieu explores the many new and surprising faces of God in contemporary society.

DES YEUX POUR PARLER

In Des yeux pour parler, a grandfather tells the story of his severely handicapped young grandson. The child's eyes, a mirror of the soul, reveal to the man - who thought he knew everything - that he has much to learn about himself, about others and about life itself. A look at difference...

DESTINS

This documentary series looks at the destinies of some of Quebec's most influential, yet least known, figures. The series is made with traditional documentary rigour thanks to contributions from experts, historians, testimonials, and archival material. Dramatic re-enactments illustrate the subjects' joys, suffering, loves, and hatreds, enabling viewers to see how their lives unfolded even as they were making history.

DIET OF SOULS

Diet of Souls completes a film trilogy that is both a personal quest and an exploration of three aspects of the Inuit mind. After Songs in Stone, which looked at the Inuk as Artist, and Nuliajuk, Mother of the Sea Beasts, which looked at the Inuk as Storyteller, Diet of Souls explores the Inuk as Hunter. This is a fitting conclusion to the trilogy, for what journey of discovery into the Inuit world would be complete without seeking to comprehend the hunter's complex relationship with the animal? The Inuit shaman Ivaluardjuk warned that only by living one's life in a manner acceptable to the spirits of the animals, and the deities who protect them, is it possible to survive - physically and spiritually. Does that ancient wisdom guide modern Inuit? Can it help us all?

DISQUES D'ART (LES)

Who can forget the time when LPs, with their almost-poster-sized sleeves, ruled the music industry? When album covers opened to reveal two pages' worth of photographs or spectacular artwork? This show looks at some of the most memorable album sleeves of the 1970s, and features interviews with the graphic artists, musicians and others involved in their creation. A trip back to a not-so-distant time when designing an album sleeve was an art.

ENQUÊTE SUR LES GENS HEUREUX

Why is it that some people, beyond their social or professional success, are fundamentally happy? Happiness, or rather the capacity for happiness, is a miracle - a miracle because difficult to understand. Contrary to popular belief, people who are happy do have their own stories to tell, and have sometimes endured horrible suffering, lived through painful moments, and undergone devastating experiences. However, these people are able to escape the forces of social determinism, fatalism and pervasive despair. Happy people have a history, but they have managed to channel it into life itself. The makers of this documentary empathize with these discreet and moving heroes.

ENQUÊTES

Enquêtes looks at recent Quebec history through the major investigations and public inquiries - judicial, journalistic and governmental - which helped usher in significant social and political change. By contrasting reality with received opinion, by fostering an environment which encouraged criticism and reflection, and by marshalling evidence and testimonials which had the power to influence public opinion, these investigations helped shape Quebec society. The series groups the various investigations by theme, with each instalment shedding light on a specific field of activity, examining its important issues and most celebrated inquiries.

EXODUS DECODED (THE)

Weaving on-location photography with a virtual environment, The Exodus Decoded addresses a big question: Biblical Exodus - fact or fiction? And it argues that it is fact, not fiction... Revelations include: the first hieroglyphic inscription attesting to the Biblical Exodus from an Egyptian point of view, a 3,500-year-old papyrus describing all 10 Biblical plagues and a 3,500-year-old image, carved in gold, of the lost Ark of the Covenant - the box that once housed the Ten Commandments.

FEUX DE FORÊT, UNE HISTOIRE DU QUÉBEC

Feux de forêt, une histoire du Québec tells the story of man's ongoing fight against forest fires, which many have described as a David-versus-Goliath struggle. Every area afflicted by a forest fire has suffered through the same ordeal: there are moments of suffering and high drama, and there are acts of bravery and heroism, occasioned by the incredible instinct for survival. Drawing on often stunning archival footage and interviews with former firefighters, the program looks at technological advances in firefighting and underlines the constant vigilance required to protect our forests, so essential to our survival.

FIDDLER'S MAP

Fiddler's Map is a one-hour documentary journey into what it means to be Métis in Canada today. Shown through the eyes and the life of Merelda Fiddler, Fiddler's Map examines the racism and resentment that forced many Métis families to give up their heritage and hide their Métis roots. The result is an overview of Métis life in Canada since the time of the fur trade, and a deep look at one woman's search to find her heritage, her family, and a place within Canada.

FIRST AND LAST

Two young soldiers died in battle at Mons, Belgium in World War I. In most respects, their lives and deaths were representative of the hundreds of thousands who died in the Great War. But in one respect they were unique. Private John Parr, aged 17, from Middlesex, England, was the first Allied soldier to die in the War; four years later, Private George Price, aged 25, from Nova Scotia, was the last. Privates Parr and Price never met, but the circumstances of their deaths have linked their lives for eternity. First and Last tells their stories and, in so doing, tells the story of the Great War itself.

FOUR SEASONS MOSAIC (THE)

The Four Seasons Mosaic is a documentary about an extraordinary collaboration between some of classical music's most respected musicians. In 2004, composer Mychael Danna joins forces with the world-acclaimed Tafelmusik Orchestra, as well as top performers from India, China, Italy and the Canadian Arctic, to create a spectacular concert performance that celebrates the music of a global village. It is a bold orchestral undertaking that re-imagines Antonio Vivaldi's The Four Seasons for the 21st century.

FRANCOPHONIES D'AMÉRIQUE : QUÉBEC, FLORIDE, CALIFORNIE

Most people in Canada and the United States know relatively little about the minority Francophone communities in their respective countries. These communities are discussed in academic publications or audiovisual works which focus on specific themes or groups. Broadly speaking, however, little has been produced that provides an overview of these communities as a whole. What's worse, the little knowledge that people outside North America have of Francophone culture is limited to the French fact in Quebec. This three-part documentary series looks at the development and evolution of minority Francophone communities in North America and also examines the relationship between these communities and Quebec.

FRIENDLY FIRE

Friendly Fire delves deep into the past and uncovers the truth behind today's headlines about the casualties of war. In January 2003, in a preliminary hearing held in a military court, two U.S. pilots were charged with involuntary manslaughter for killing four Canadian soldiers near Kandahar, Afghanistan on April 17, 2002. It was the first time in history that such charges had been laid, and the incident has shone a spotlight on the phenomenon of "friendly fire."

GOOD FIGHT: THE LIFE & TIMES OF CARL BREWER (THE)

Carl Brewer was one of the best hockey defencemen of his time. In most other players, skills such as his would have formed the foundation of a long career and, eventually, led to a place in the Hockey Hall of Fame. Brewer, however, let his principles get in the way. In the early 1990s, Brewer led a group of players in a lawsuit against the National Hockey League Players Association, which resulted in a landmark settlement in favour of the players' pension rights. As part of the ruling, Alan Eagleson, the powerful head of the NHLPA, was sent to prison. Brewer's story is one of the most important Canadian sports stories of the last half-century, its legacy benefiting the game's stars to this day.

GRAND DÉRANGEMENT DE SAINT-PAULIN DALIBAIRE (LE)

In 1971, the tiny village of Saint-Paulin Dalibaire, in Quebec's Gaspé region, was closed down under a government pilot project. Filmmaker Jean-Claude Labrecque happened to be in the doomed village shooting the film Les Smattes at the time. The old people of the village, heartbroken, went off to die in public housing. Some 33 years later, the scars caused by the event are still visible: anguished souls wander the village in search of their roots.
