100% WOMAN

Shot over two years, 100% Woman chronicles Canadian mountain-bike champion Michelle Dumaresq's controversial foray into the adrenaline-charged world of downhill mountain-bike racing. For the first 20 years of her life, Michelle was Michael. As the first transgendered athlete ever named to a national team, she's testing all the limits. Whether it's friendships with her teammates or the political climate of international sport, Michelle forces us all to ask: can a transsexual be 100% Woman?

72 HOURS: TRUE CRIME II

Every detective knows that the first 72 hours after a crime are crucial to solving it, even if it sometimes takes years to put the criminal away. 72 Hours: True Crime focuses on true cases drawn from the files of police and forensic scientists. Shot in a "nouveau noir" style, 72 Hours combines dramatic recreations with dynamic documentary footage of real people who were involved in each case. The result is a riveting series about the twists and turns in a criminal investigation and the clever techniques used to solve these true crime thrillers.

ABLONI / LA CHEMISE

Many of us get rid of unwanted yet still wearable clothes by donating them to charitable organizations. Most of us don't realize, however, just what happens to these clothes after they have been donated. Abloni tells the story of one such piece of clothing, an ordinary shirt which takes an extraordinary trip from Quebec to Togo. As we follow the shirt's travels we also embark on a fascinating look at the world of second-hand clothing.

ADDIS-ABEBA-CANADA : L'ESPRIT DU LYCÉE

The subjects of this documentary, who live in Ottawa, Montréal and Toronto, share a very special bond with hundreds of Ethiopians who have settled in Canada and thousands of others who live around the world: values of brotherhood and tolerance expressed - as we discover to both our surprise and joy - in the language and culture of France. What do they have in common? They are all graduates of the Lycée français Guebre Mariam in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia.

ALEXANDRA'S ECHO

Alexandra Morton lives in paradise - remote Echo Bay in the Broughton Archipelago off British Columbia. And she fears that it will be paradise lost if she cannot stem the relentless tide of fish farms into the area. As she bluntly puts is, "What's the real price of cheap farmed fish? Nothing less than the destruction of the last temperate rain forest in the world." This film follows Morton, a foremost expert on killer whales, as she gathers evidence in her desperate crusade to save the wild Pacific salmon and the coastal ecology.

ALTER EGOS

Ryan Larkin and Chris Landreth are Alter Egos. More than 30 years ago, Ryan was among the world's most celebrated animators and an Oscar nominee. Today, he panhandles on the street to make ends meet. Chris, a rising star in animation, is beginning to experience the kind of adulation Ryan saw decades earlier. In this poignant study of artists, addiction and creativity, director Laurence Green explores these renowned filmmakers, their complex relationship and the reasons for their divergent paths.

AMOUR EN PEN (L')

Inmates serving long prison sentences talk about the one true love of their life, whether a father, brother, child, or spouse. From the four walls of their sentences and endless, everyday routines arise their odes to love - astonishing, irreverent, moving. They are a new Song of Songs, a cry. Through these pure and luminous accounts of unconditional love we come to understand how crucial it is that we be loved, from childhood on.

APPASSIONATA

Sophie-Carmen (Sonia) Eckhardt-Gramatté - a great modern classical composer of the 20th century - shared her passion with two men. An artistic rebel who defied all barriers, her creativity was nourished first by German Expressionist artist Walter Gramatté, and later by art historian and writer Ferdinand Eckhardt. In an astonishing career that took her from Paris, Berlin and Vienna to Western Canada, Sonia and her two great loves remained inseparable, in death as much as in life.

ART D'ÊTRE PARENT V (L')

Being a parent is like being an artist, though it's not about having the right technique or an innate talent. Parenting is about helping create new life that will evolve into something unique, and fully devoting one's desires, ambitions, beliefs, intuition and emotions to that life. Being a parent also means avoiding the temptation to lay down the paintbrush and walk away before the work is completed. It's about finding the courage to keep at it until the child is ready, in turn, to engage in his or her own act of creation.

ASHLEY MACISAAC: ME, MYSELF & THE DEVIL

This film documents fiddler Ashley MacIsaac's rise to musical and tabloid prominence on a journey that begins in Creignish, Nova Scotia. Interviews with his family, friends and musical mentors begin to illuminate how Ashley's roots in Cape Breton inspired his music and cast the mold of personality that he continually shatters. The film chronicles his experiences on Broadway and Carnegie Hall, in the recording studio, and in Athens, where Ashley performed during the 2004 Olympics.

AT DEATH'S DOOR

Armande Bethiaume and her sons René, Yves and Robert are Hawkesbury, Ontario's first family of funerals. The Berthiaumes have been dealing in death since 1896. Their story takes us from life and death in small-town Ontario to Nashville, Tennessee and the largest funeral trade show in the world. This rare, behind-the scenes look at a funeral-home family helps lift the veil of mystery that still shrouds those who work in the funeral business.

SEX, TRUTH AND VIDEOTAPE

Sex, Truth and Videotape looks at contemporary sexual practices by giving voice to those who are at the forefront of the discussion today: women. The program deals bluntly, personally and irreverently with the topic - by listening not to what the experts have to say but by letting women themselves talk frankly about their sex lives.

BALLET GIRLS

Ballet Girls is a behind-the-scenes documentary series that follows nine girls on a quest to land the coveted role of Clara in the Royal Winnipeg Ballet's Nutcracker. The girls come from across Canada - gap-toothed 10-year-olds and willowy teens with ballerina dreams dancing in their heads. In this "Canadian Idol" of the ballet world, ambitious young dancers compete to share the stage with professionals, taking the first pointed step in their own careers as dancers.

BEETHOVEN'S HAIR

Beethoven's Hair traces the unlikely journey of a lock of hair cut from Beethoven's corpse and unravels the mystery of his tortured life and death. The film begins in modern times, when a pair of Beethoven enthusiasts purchase the hair at a Sotheby's auction. The story then looks at the lock's previous owners and culminates in the science that reveals Beethoven's "medical secret." Set to a lush score of some of Beethoven's most glorious music, the film explores the world of forensic testing in sharp relief against the romance of 19th-century Vienna and the horrors of 20th-century Nazi Germany.

BEHIND THE MASK

Its chilling image is of a masked militant: a symbol of rage. Perceived in the West as an intransigent terrorist group devoted to the destruction of Israel, Hamas is seen by many in the Muslim world as a popular resistance movement which has given a sense of pride to a people who have only known despair. Behind the Mask looks at the people behind the terrorist image - their passion, beliefs and sense of injustice. In a time of terrorism, Behind the Mask is a cautionary tale about the cost of oppression.

BHOPAL: THE SEARCH FOR JUSTICE

Bhopal: The Search for Justice straddles science, politics and human rights as it explores charges that the true toll of the 1984 gas-leak disaster was officially covered up. Set against the rich visual tapestry of India, the film follows Raajkumar Keswani, a local journalist whose prediction of the Union Carbide disaster proved prophetic. Keswani travels through the Indian bastiis where the poorest victims live, visits the offices of frustrated doctors and scientists, and, finally, makes his first trip to North America in search of answers.

BIG SUGAR

Big Sugar pierces the hidden history and modern power of the sugar cartels. It explores how Big Sugar worked eight million African slaves to death to create an international empire of wealth, power and staggering political influence. Today, its payola-sweetened scientists and politicians deny Big Sugar is behind another form of sugar slavery: the soaring consumption of pop and sugar junk food, which has created a worldwide obesity crisis...

BIOGRAPHER'S VOICE (THE): THE LIFE AND TIMES OF PETER C. NEWMAN

Peter C. Newman, one of the most influential biographers in Canadian history, came to Canada as a young boy in 1940, a refugee from Nazi Europe. His quest to gain a voice in his adopted country was immediately smothered by another, more powerful feeling: that he didn't belong, that he was an outsider. Peter Newman has been affected by the events of his dramatic life - and those events have, in turn, affected what he's written, who he's profiled and how he's interpreted his subjects' lives.

BOOTLEGGERS D'ATLANTIQUE

In 1920, the United States attempted to ban liquor by launching Prohibition. Canada, however, continued to tolerate the consumption of alcohol. Under these ideal conditions, a major network devoted to the smuggling of contraband liquor quickly sprang up. Acadian communities have a wealth of stories to tell about the bootlegging operations, and this program recounts a few of them - with the help of two rather special bootleggers. This humorous docu-drama is based on real-life events.

CAPTIVE - THE STORY OF ESTHER

Captive tells the story of the filmmaker's ancestor, Esther Wheelwright, who was abducted by the Abenaki people in 1703 as a child and taken from New England to Quebec. Raised a Puritan, Esther converted to Catholicism, refused to return to her family, and became an Ursuline nun. Among her extraordinary achievements, she became Mother Superior of her Order, fought for women's education, buried General Montcalm and helped to ensure the survival of the French Canadian people and the Catholic Church after the British Conquest of 1759.

CATCHING THE CHAMELEON

Andy Seidemann, a constable with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, isn't brilliant, well-spoken or highly ranked, and he isn't well-known within his community or his country. There's nothing distinctive about him... except that he's a bonafide hero. Louis Barron, on the other hand, is a brilliant man. He's articulate, can speak five languages, and has been a bush pilot and a missionary. He should be someone to admire, but instead... he's evil incarnate. Catching the Chameleon tells the compelling true story of how a small-town cop makes it his mission to track down and bring to justice a brilliant, elusive pedophile.

CHAÎNE ALIMENTAIRE COMME UN DÉPOTOIR ! (LA)

The food we eat seems edible, but is it really safe? Mad cows, BSE, and dioxins have helped raise the alarm about the food we eat. Private and public companies, which claim to be champions of environmental protection, have directly or indirectly introduced harmful substances into the human food chain: waste matter from processing plants, industries, slaughterhouses, and purification plants. This documentary reveals the underside of the food business, examines food quality as it is today and will be in future, and offers a harsh and ironic look at those who are meant to be protecting us.

CHANTIERS

Chantiers looks at eight major construction projects which Quebec undertook in the 1960s and 1970s, from initial idea and concept, to production, and impact on society. These projects had a number of things in common: their size, scope and technical and technological challenges, the ideological debate they fostered, the domino effect of subsequent projects they engendered... and other mega-construction issues which Quebec had to face for the first time in its history.

CHARIA AU CANADA (LA)

In December 2004, Marion Boyd, Ontario's former Attorney General and Minister Responsible for Women's Issues, issued a report recommending that family disputes among Muslims in Ontario be arbitrated using religious Islamic law. How have the hundreds of thousands of Muslim women in Canada reacted to the possible implementation of "Canadian Sharia law"? Will Canada, in the name of multiculturalism, allow "its" Muslims to settle disputes within their communities using their own laws?

CHEMIN D'EAU DE LA BASSE-CÔTE-NORD (LE)

Le Chemin d'eau de la Basse-Côte-Nord examines what it means to live in an isolated community on Quebec's Lower North Shore through the prism of three cultures: First Nations people, Anglophones and Francophones. This documentary by renowned filmmaker Jean-Claude Labrecque expresses both hope and concern for the communities' survival. The film revolves around the supply ship Nordik Express's first trip of the season to these communities.

CHEMIN FAISANT

Chemin faisant looks at children who are suffering in some way, physically, emotionally - children whom we see giving voice to their pain, fear, despair, anger, and immense need for affection. These are children who have been dealt a terrible blow, and who reveal a part of themselves to us. We witness their suffering, their individual capacity to emerge from the "grey zone" of their lives, and the initiatives that they, and those of the adults in their lives, undertake to overcome their condition.

CROSS AND BONES (THE)

Welcome to Drumheller, Alberta, a small town in the middle of the Canadian Badlands where Jesus Christ, Tyrannosaurus Rex and 3000 bikers collide in steaming irony. Juxtaposing a summer production of The Passion Play with the world's richest dinosaur graveyard and an annual Harley Davidson rally, The Cross and Bones is an ironic exploration of the faith-or-science dilemma. Drumheller is revealed like never before through the eyes of locals and tourists who flock to this mythical landscape to either worship a theatrical God, dig for precious skeletons or party hardy in the dusty hills.

DAB IYIYUU II / ABSOLUTELY ABORIGINAL

Dab Iyiyuu II / Absolutely Aboriginal builds upon Rezolution Pictures' acclaimed series, Dab Iyiyuu I / Absolutely Cree. Each episode of Absolutely Aboriginal features an elder, or a couple, who provide instruction on particular skills, insight into a related ceremony, and an account of an indigenous legend. Inheritors of a rich oral tradition, the elders are natural storytellers; a re-enacted account of the legend they recount, featuring Aboriginal performers, rounds out each episode.

DANCES WITH BULLS

"Eight seconds on any bull is a long time. It's even longer when you’re under it! Nothing funny about it, yet they call us clowns. We're not the matadors. We're the red cape." His name is David "Sandman" Sandilands. The last place you want to be is where he goes everyday. We step into the rodeo ring with him. In an adrenalin-soaked presentation of sight and sound, Dances With Bulls immerses viewers in the life-threatening frenzy of what many call the "rodeo clown," and the profession calls a bullfighter.

DE LA SOURCE AU RUISSEAU

This documentary recounts the history of the Missionary Oblate Sisters of the Sacred Heart and of Mary Immaculate, the only religious community to be founded in Manitoba. From its humble origins as community founded by Archbishop Langevin to train teachers who would help preserve the French language in Manitoba, to its missions abroad; from the Renewal Centre to the Cross Lake Mission and the poor neighbourhoods of Montréal, the program traces the community's 100 years of work.

DÉFAILLANCES TECHNIQUES II

When technology fails, everything comes to a standstill. What should we do about our society's aging infrastructure? What are the human dramas that result from the constant threat of technological failure? Who controls the technology that is meant to serve us? How do we handle the growing complexity of technology - which we seem to ignore? Défaillances techniques examines these questions by speaking to the men and women who create technology.

DEMENTIA

Most people find the notion of losing their mind terrifying. But in fact people do not lose their minds; they lose cognitive skills. Their identity and feelings remain. They can be funny, moving, deeply touching, and as human as ever. In this film, they are.

DERNIER MATCH DE LA VIE (LE)

The three-part documentary Le dernier match de la vie examines how death is handled in Quebec today. Hosted by well-known journalist Claude Charron, the series takes viewers to diverse locations - hospitals, private homes, palliative care centres - and meets Quebecers who have been touched, directly or indirectly, by death and who, in their own way, have travelled along the "final path." The series revolves around three main groups of people: the dying, their friends and next of kin, and their caregivers.

DERNIÈRES VIOLENCES (LES)

Les dernières violences is a POV documentary about the elderly and the difficulties they may face: economic and social hardship, exploitation and abuse. The underlying theme of the documentary is the filmmaker's quest to understand the source of violence against the elderly. She speaks to experts, who shed light on the various processes and mechanisms of violence, as well as to people who have themselves been involved in this violence.

DESTINIES APART

Destinies Apart follows Newfoundland writer Lisa Moore on a journey through Newfoundland and Iceland to delve into the idea of destiny and how it relates to these two island cultures. Sixty years ago, Iceland and Newfoundland were both colonies, dependent on the motherland. In 1944, Iceland, a desperately poor place, achieved independence from Denmark. Five years later, Newfoundlanders went in the opposite direction and voted to join Canada. Both countries, at a crossroads, chose very different routes and landed in very different places.

DISAPPEARANCE OF THE PX-15 (THE)

In the shadow of the Cold War, the Vietnam conflict, and the Apollo moon walk, a revolutionary Swiss-built submarine changed history. In 1969, the PX-15 Ben Franklin, the world's first manned deep-sea research sub, drifted up the Gulf Stream from Florida to Halifax, gathering crucial data for NASA. The Disappearance of the PX-15 follows maritime archeologist James Delgado 35 years later as he restores the sub and unites the surviving aquanauts in an emotional story of courage and vision.

DONNELLYS (THE) - MURDER AND RETRIBUTION IN THE NEW WORLD

On a cold night in February, 1880, five members of the Donnelly family were brutally murdered by their neighbours, near London, Ontario. There were two eyewitnesses to the massacre and two trials followed, but there were no convictions. This compelling documentary probes the historical and social issues that bore down on the community: Irish history and culture, the penal laws, secret societies, potato famines and abject poverty that caused millions of Irish to emigrate to all corners of the globe.

DOUBLE MIXTE

Double mixte looks at multiracial couples, who are becoming more and more numerous in large urban areas. Living in a committed relationship is never easy. But what's it like when two partners speak a different language, come from different cultures, have different religious beliefs? How do they reconcile their cultural differences? How do you hang on to your culture while sharing your partner's? How do you make room in your life for "extra" values, customs and traditions? Do multiracial couples manage to live in harmony despite or because of their cultural particularities?

Over the last few years, Quebec performers and technical crews have increasingly made their presence felt in Las Vegas, the unofficial capital of international show business. Thanks to such show-biz phenomena as the Cirque du Soleil and Céline Dion, hundreds of Quebecers have settled in Las Vegas, forming a distinct community. This documentary looks at the community's way of life and profiles the two men who initiated and continue to drive the phenomenon, Guy Laliberté and René Angelil.

EMBRYO ADOPTION

Across North America, hundreds of thousands of human embryos lie frozen in fertility clinics. A controversial program now allows their owners to let infertile couples "adopt" the embryos. Embryo Adoption follows Canadian and American couples through this unregulated process. It profiles donor couples searching for the best home for their "unborn children," as well as adopting couples desperate for a child who hope this unusual option will fulfill their dream.

ENFANTS DE LA BALLE (LES)

Fifteen-year-olds Elvis and Aghilès, both recent immigrants to Quebec, play on a soccer team coached by Philippe, a 26-year-old Quebecer. At the end of the school day, the two boys dream of soccer - of winning, of the World Cup. More than anything, though, they dream of one day seeing their parents in the stands at a game. As first-generation immigrants, Elvis and Aghilès find their dreams as North Americans conflicting with the dreams of their immigrant parents.

ENFANTS DE LA DPJ

"Repression rather than prevention," "short-sighted management," "process heavy"... When it comes to our youth-protection services, everybody has something to say. But no-one seems prepared to listen to the system's principal stakeholders: the children themselves. The documentary Ces enfants de la DPJ lets the children speak.

ENGLISH TEACHERS III

English Teachers follows a group of six young Canadian men and women who travel to Taipei, the thriving capital city of Taiwan, to teach English as a Second Language (ESL) to Taiwanese children. Each person has different reasons for leaving home and embarking on this grand adventure. They don't know the culture, they don't know the language, and they're half a planet away from home. Unprepared, inexperienced, and uncertain of their fate, they never know just how crazy things will get.

ENQUÊTE D'AVENTURE

Our attitude toward adventurers and thrill-seekers alternates between admiration and condemnation. We may envy them, even as we don't really understand what motivates them. What compels adventurers to seek out extreme experiences? Enquête d'aventure explores the reasons that certain people need to push themselves to their limit - and beyond - and looks at how the phenomenon has exploded in popularity over the last 10 years.

EST RENCONTRE L'OUEST SUR LA ROUTE DE LA SOIE (L')

This documentary, a co-production with China about the historic Silk Road, is less a history-focused treatment of the subject than a personal chronicle resulting from travels which Serge Losique has made to China over the years. The documentary employs a cinematic approach to the subject, in which dialogue serves only as a guide to the images of the fabled Road, site of both glory and tragedy.

ÉTÉ, C'EST PAS JUSTE NOËL ! (L')

It's "Christmas in July" at the holiday campground. As they prepare for the festivities, vacationers from Montréal talk about what the modern family means to them. While they discuss and praise the benefits of the traditional family, we see another couple in the process of breaking up. Meanwhile, bad weather threatens the campground's Santa Claus parade, and another family drama unfolds. In the neighbouring village, a man has just murdered his wife and two daughters. The campground is on edge...

FACE OF VICTORY (THE)

Created to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Allied victory in World War II, The Face of Victory is woven entirely from rare archival photographs taken in the summer and autumn of 1945. The photos record the initial moments when people all over the world first grasped the consequences of the war's resolution; a time when history paused and people stood on a strange brink between the carnage of the past and their hope for the future.

WHAT'S THAT ABOUT?

This series explores the technological and scientific secrets behind everyday objects. These are the ordinary, widespread, even banal items we use daily, items which, beneath their apparent simplicity, contain a world of surprising scientific discoveries. They are associated with a variety of ordinary tasks: drinking, cooking, sleeping, washing, lighting a room, walking, cleaning, transportation, renovation... and seduction!
