35 YEARS IN THE LIFE I, II

www.35Years.ca

In the late 1960’s, the CBC created Five Years in the Life, a series that captured on film the lives of 42 Canadian families. Only a handful were followed up before the show was cancelled in 1973. 35 Years in the Life explores what happened to nine of those families and celebrates moments in their lives... moments of great joy and, at times, of deep despair.

ABASARUZI, UNE MOISSON D'ESPOIR

Abasaruzi introduces us to a Toronto church that welcomes, counsels, comforts and directs immigrants from the Great Lakes countries of Africa: Burundi, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Through the film, we grasp the importance and the strength of the message of peace and love that find its meaning in the context of a difficult integration into one of North America’s big cities.

And They Danced celebrates the dance hall culture of Cape Breton Island, taking viewers on a musical journey to a place where rhythm and reels are the heartbeat of communities. Set in sprawling Inverness County, the documentary is rich with song, dance and stories. Summer nights on this tranquil island are anything but. This documentary takes us into the worlds of three Quebec athletes who move in the elite circles of their respective sports. They compete at a high level but not high enough to get the VIP treatment of the stars. Geneviève Simard (downhill skiing), Marie-Ève Pelletier (tennis) and Isabelle Blais-Beisieger (golf) are, for the moment, standing on the threshold of greatness.

ARRIÈRE-SCÈNE

This is an insider’s look at Quebec’s behind-the-scenes music industry. Arrière-scène invites the viewer to get to know such lesser known music artisans as the bar musician, the musical tour director, the CD salesperson, the composer of advertising jingles and those who write the musical scores for films. Quebec has a bounty of such artisans that have made their name here and abroad and this 13-part series lets us in on why they do what they do and why they have chosen to live their art.

AU-DELÀ DES APPARENCES - PORTRAIT DE MARIE-CLAIRE BLAIS

Au-delà des apparences - portrait de Marie-Claire Blais opens a door on the life and work of one of Quebec’s most celebrated writers. Interviews with fellow writers, such as Margaret Atwood, Antonine Maillet, Jacques Crête and Pauline Michel bear witness to the strength and impact of Blais’ writing on our era. Others speak more of the personal and the socially engaged side of Blais. The author herself speaks of her first works, like La Belle Bête and of her most recent, Augustino ou le choeur de la destruction.

BIEN OU MAL ?

Hosted by the highly respected Quebec journalist Yves Boisvert, this series deals with the subjects that raise the major ethical questions of the day: organ transplants, euthanasia, video surveillance in public area, assisted suicide. In short, these are the topics that are frequently debated and that present important social, political and economic implications. This hard-hitting series takes no sides; rather, it’s a reflection upon the fundamental human rights and the values of Quebec society.

BLEDI, MON PAYS EST ICI

www.bledilefilm.net

Bledi, mon pays est ici examines the daily realities of life for non-status Algerians living in Quebec and threatened with deportation. The story of Mohamed Cherfi, who has come to symbolize the issue, lies at the heart of the film. In March 2004, Cherfi made headlines when police, in the first such action of its kind in Canada, forcibly removed him from a Quebec City church where he had sought sanctuary. Through Cherfi's story, the film depicts the courage displayed by members of the Algerian community as well as the impact that years of uncertainty have had on their lives.

The documentary looks at how bombers dreamed of using air power to attack the enemy with precision. Ironically, these same bombers made civilians the main victims of 20th century warfare. BONNES À TOUT FAIRE

Since 1981, a federal government program has allowed Canadians to hire foreigners willing to work as family helpers in Canada. Shot in Montréal and the Philippines, Bonnes à tout faire tells the stories of three family helpers now living in Quebec, and of the families they left behind in the Philippines. Through its intimate portrait of these three women – who are part of the largest migration of women in the world – the film examines the social conditions under which family helpers live and reflects on the state of families in western societies today.

CHEZ SCHWARTZ'S

Chez Schwartz’s captures the energy of a Montreal institution, famous for its smoked meat and ambience. The film’s guides are the busboys and the meat-cutters, some of whom have been at the tiny greasy spoon for more than 25 years. Filmed over four seasons, Chez Schwartz’s introduces us to the regulars, some of whom have been patrons for 60 years, to the tourists that come from all over the world, and to the beggars that hang out at the entrance. They’re all part of the legend.

COUNTRY

Cowboys, musicians, singers, fans: for six months of the year, these colourful and charming characters immerse themselves in the special world of country festivals. Carole Laganière travels with them to various festivals held throughout Quebec during the summer months, and discovers a unique and welcoming culture. Through her documentary, we also learn to share in, and ultimately understand, the passion of these fans, who travel from town to town to live life with a "country" rhythm.

CRACKING UP

Cracking Up follows 12 brave individuals as they take a course in stand-up comedy. They also happen to suffer from schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and depression. "It's like The Full Monty except people want us to keep our clothes on," jokes counselor and comedian David Granirer who devised the program. The film knocks the wind out of the stereotypes associated with mental illness and shows how a slightly skewed perspective on the world can be a very funny gift indeed.

CRIMES OF PASSION

Without judgment, Crimes of Passion unravels the events that take love to its darkest place. Not that we might ever be able to explain, only that we might find a way to understand how someone, who seemingly functions well in other areas of his or her life, might loose balance enough to commit the unthinkable...

DAB IYIYUU III

The elders have a special place in indigenous cultures. The James Bay Cree call them the Dab Iyiyuu, a term which translates loosely as the real people, or the authentic ones. They are spiritual guides, teachers and living links to the world’s remaining hunter-gatherer cultures. In societies based on oral tradition, it is the elders who tell and retell the history of their people. It is the elders who tend to the flame of tradition.

DANGEROUS WHEN PROVOKED: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF TERRY MOSHER

Few sharper eyes have turned their attention to the weaknesses and foibles of Canadian leaders than those of Terry Mosher. The veteran Montreal cartoonist, known to thousands of Gazette newspaper readers simply as Aislin, has been aptly described as "a barber with a chainsaw." Among the proud and mighty who have sat in his chair over the past 40 years are René Lévesque, Brian Mulroney and Jean Chrétien.

DEEP WRECK MYSTERIES

Britain is surrounded by shipwrecks, many sunk during the past two world wars. Deep below the sea surface, they remain silent witnesses to the conflict and carnage of their sinking. Until now, they've been difficult to find, their waters too deep to dive in, too dark and dangerous to film. With the United Kingdom's top technical diving camera team, we descend into the unexpectedly crystal clear waters to reveal a world of political intrigue, cover-up and atrocity.

DESTINATION NOR’OUEST

This historical documentary tells of the events and emotions experienced by nine men and women during a 2,500 km canoe trip from the Lachine Canal, in Montreal, to the Red River Valley near Winnipeg. Inspired by the Voyageurs who, 200 years ago, took the same route in the quest for furs, the group faces enormous natural and human challenges throughout their 100 days of paddling.

DIEU ET NOUS

From the first missionaries to the guitar-strumming masses of the 1970s, the Catholic Church in Quebec has been a major player in the province’s history. The evidence is abundant: Quebec French is peppered with swear words whose origins are in religious artefacts; every village is overshadowed by the enormous church spire. Clearly, Quebec society was once number one on God’s best-sellers list. Dieu et nous tells the story of the irrisistible rise and cataclysmic fall of the Church in Canada’s once most pious province.

DISASTERS OF THE CENTURY VII

Over the years, disasters have rocked the world, stealing innocence and destroying lives. Some of these disasters are easily remembered, others forgotten, but all should be reflected upon. Disasters of the Century, looks not only at the devastating toll of natural and man-made disasters, but also at the far reaching implications of each tragedy on our social history, at how something that happened long ago affects the way we live today.

ÉLOGE DU MENSONGE EN AMOUR (L')

We’re all a bunch of liars... and it’s a good thing we are! Why? Because daily lies are necessary to maintaining social harmony. The lover’s lie is the most common. We all know its perverse effects. But might there also be benefits? Here’s a personal, provocative and amusing reflection on an age-old subject.

EN MAL DE MÈRE

We expect mothers to provide their children with both love and protection. But what happens when the mother-child relationship is poisonous? And particularly when the child is a girl? Soul-destroying words, systematic criticism, unpleasant comments... certain mothers have a knack for words that wound and leave permanent scars. Deprived of the most basic bond with their mothers, these daughters learn to bury their suffering deep within themselves in order to survive. In this documentary, they tell their stories with clarity and insight.

ESCAPE TO CANADA

www.escaptetocanada.ca

Canada is considered a boring country, but a new image is emerging. In 2003, gay marriage is legalized and marijuana is decriminalized. Citizens from “the land of the free” flock across the border to marry their same-sex partners, smoke marijuana or escape army service. Could Canada suddenly be cool?

EXILÉS DE GAIA (LES)

There are 25 million eco-refugees wandering the planet and, for the first time ever, they outnumber the planet’s 23 million war refugees. Some specialists predict that the numbers of this new brand of refugee could quadruple between now and 2025. And the issue isn’t unique to the developing countries. Everyone is affected. Les Exilés de Gaïa presents its reflection on this phenomenon by look at three states: Brazil, the Maldives and Canada.

FEMMES DE LA BRUCKMAN (LES)

In 2001, during the financial crisis that rocked Argentina, the female employees of a men's-clothing business took over the factory where they worked, and that had been abandoned by its owners. The factory, now under worker management, continued production. This documentary tells the story of their daily struggle – a struggle marked by courage, sacrifice, hope and solidarity, as well as inevitable conflict. What began as a simple act of survival became a lesson in citizenship that forever changed the women of the factory.

FERRY COMMAND

At the beginning of the Second World War, aircraft produced in North America were shipped across the Atlantic. Ever-present enemy submarines and battleships made the crossing dangerous and the supply sporadic. The Atlantic Ferry Organization, a civilian aviation team, had the vision, spirit and determination to devise a plan that saw the aircraft flown from North America to Europe. Ferry Command portrays their efforts and resolve in overcoming natural, human and technological obstacles.

GREENPEACE: MAKING A STAND

Based on a book by Vancouver journalist Rex Weyler, Greenpeace: Making a Stand chronicles the early Greenpeace years through anecdotes, archival footage and period music that depict an exceptional era. Bringing this story from the 1970s into the moment, we watch some of the founding members of Greenpeace, one of the oldest environmental groups, interact with young activists working to save the forests of Argentina -- two generations sharing the passion that continues to transform the planet.

HABBAKUK: SHIP OF ICE

During the Second World War in an effort to support Allied Forces in the U-boat plagued North Atlantic, an eccentric British genius, Geoffrey Pyke, made an unusual proposal that captured the imagination of Winston Churchill and Lord Mountbatten. Pyke intended to build an indestructible ship of ice to serve as a floating airfield in the frigid Atlantic waters. With the help of the Canadian government, a prototype, “Habbakuk,” was constructed in Alberta’s Patricia Lake.

HAMMER AND TICKLE

Communism in Europe may have been nothing to joke about – or wasn’t it? Hammer and Tickle explores just how humour contributed to the defeat of the infamous regimes. More than a compilation of jokes -- of which there are thousands -- the film presents the people who created the jokes, those who tried to silence them, the ones who risked punishment merely in documenting them and the unfortunates who were imprisoned for telling them.

In Hearts of Dartmouth: Life of a Trailer Park Girl, filmmaker Annemarie Cassidy explores the genesis, growing pains, and eventual success of the cult comedy show Trailer Park Boys, a series about life in a Dartmouth, Nova Scotia trailer park. As hair and make-up artist for the show since its beginning, Cassidy brings her particular point of view to Hearts of Dartmouth, showing why, in her words, the show "represents a revolution in Canadian television."

HI HO: THE RISE AND FALL OF THE GRUMPY BURGER

Hi Ho: The Rise and Fall of the Grumpy Burger follows obsessive, indie filmmaker Marshall Sfalcin as he chronicles the rise and fall of his family's hamburger empire - an empire that some say was the inspiration for today's fast-food industry. Along the way, Marshall confronts dark family secrets, the cutthroat business of fast food, the fickle whims of history and the madness that comes with making a no-budget film.

HISTOIRE DE JACKIE VAUTOUR (L')

Through the story of Jackie Vautour, this documentary takes viewers back to the creation of Kouchibougouac National Park in 1969 when eight villages -- and their 1,500 citizens – were expropriated from their land in eastern New Brunswick. Cajun singer-songwriter, Zachary Richard dedicates his recording, Coeur fidèle, « to all my francophone brothers and sisters in America. To Louis Riel, Beausoleil and Jackie Vautour... » Inspired by his own words and 35 years after the fact, Richard looks at what happened to those expropriated and to the politicians of the era.

HISTOIRES DE ZIZIS

Histoires de zizis is a film about the penis. It presents different points of view on the subject and treats the member, whenever possible, with humour. Which, given how easily the subject raises embarrassed laughter and sarcastic commentary, doesn’t take much. Often, the mere mention of the word elicits lively conversation. The film asks: How does today’s man relate to his penis? And, how do men, women, children and the specialists speak about the penis?

HISTOIRES OUBLIÉES V

www.histoiresoubliees.ca

This documentary series chronicles some of the significant events and true-life stories that shaped our collective history – but which are now largely forgotten. Well-researched and documented, the series looks closely at stories which once made headlines around the world, but that, over the years, have become "anonymous," removed from their specific historical context.

HITLER'S CANADIANS

Canada was home to some 40,000 German prisoners of war during the Second World War. Hitler’s Canadians chronicles the POWs’ experience of the transition from warrior to captive, and their obsessive, often comical attempts to get back to Germany. Canada’s effect on the POWs did not stop with their return home. After the war, several hundred former prisoners returned to Canada to build new lives and raise families in the country that once was their prison.
