SHATTERED CITY: THE HALIFAX EXPLOSION

It was the height of the First World War and Halifax was the epicentre of the massive movement of men and munitions. In the early hours of December 6, 1917, something went horribly wrong. The Mont Blanc, a French-owned munitions carrier loaded with thousands of tons of explosives, collided with a Belgian relief ship and caught fire. At 9:05 a.m., the Mont Blanc ignited in Halifax harbour - causing the world's greatest explosion before Hiroshima. Shattered City: The Halifax Explosion tells the story of how this tragic incident became a living metaphor for the war and how the people of Halifax rose from the ashes.
