Fifteen Canadian films selected for the 58th Berlin International Film Festival
Montreal, January 21, 2008 – Telefilm Canada is proud to announce that 15 Canadian films have been selected as official entrants in the 58th Berlin International Film Festival, which runs February 7th to 17th, 2008. Most notably, Amos Kollek’s Restless (a world premiere) is in the Festival’s prestigious Competition. The triumphant return of Guy Maddin on opening night of the International Forum of New Cinema program with his newest offering My Winnipeg (after wild praise for last year’s Brand Upon the Brain!) is sure to be a highlight. Yves-Christian Fournier’s world premiere of Tout est parfait is part of the Panorama program as are films from Bruce LaBruce (Otto; or, Up with Dead People) and Anaïs Barbeau-Lavalette (Le Ring). While Tanaz Eshaghian’s Be Like Others and Yoav Shamir’s Flipping Out join Maddin in the Forum.
The Forum Expanded is presenting a number of Canadian shorts and installations: Kent Monkman and Gisèle Gordon’s Miss Chief Eagle Testickle Trilogy (Group of Seven Inches, Robin’s Hood and Shooting Geronimo), Jeremy Shaw’s Best Minds, Part One, Scott Miller Barry's and Adam Segal's Taking Pictures and Noam Gonick and Luis Jacob’s Wildflowers of Manitoba.
Maxime Desmons’ Bonne Mère and Claudia Morgado’s No Bikini are highlighted in the Berlinale Shorts program.
“Telefilm’s support for Canadian filmmakers seeking to benefit from international markets and festivals has helped ensure creators, producers and distributors can meet and discuss business deals around the word,” said Wayne Clarkson, Telefilm’s Executive Director. “It has also increased the visibility of Canadian movies with filmgoers as well as the national and foreign media.”
Telefilm at the Berlinale
To further promote the Canadian film industry, Telefilm is showcasing three initiatives: Perspective Canada, the Canada Sales Desk and Producers Without Borders.
In its third year, Perspective Canada will showcase 12 recent Canadian features as part of the European Film Market: Breakfast with Scot, Continental, Un film sans fusil, Fugitive Pieces, Just Buried, My Winnipeg, Normal, Real Time, Le Ring, Les 3 p’tits cochons, Tout est parfait, Walk All Over Me and Young People F*cking. Once again, Telefilm has worked in close collaboration with rights holders to increase the international exploitation of these films.
Meanwhile, the Canada Sales Desk will offer the ideal networking venue for Canadian distributors and producers to meet international buyers and co-producing partners.
Telefilm’s new Producers Without Borders directory puts the spotlight on Canadian producers from across the country with projects in development seeking financing through co-production or pre-sales. Registered producers in the directory will also benefit from a matchmaking service during a networking event called Meet The Canadians at the Canadian Embassy in Berlin.
Berlinale Co-Production Market
The producers behind Deepa Mehta’s and Aaron Woodley’s most recent projects – Carpet Boy and The Visitor respectively – were chosen from 378 submissions by filmmakers from 25 countries. The projects’ producers will spend three days fine-tuning their features through the Berlinale Co-Production Market. In its fifth year, the Co-Production Market provides an unparalleled opportunity for invited producers to meet with potential international investors and co-production partners.
Berlinale Talent Campus
Six up-and-coming Canadian filmmakers have been invited to participate in a six-day creative summit called the Talent Campus: Joyce Wong (director), Stephen Philipson (editor), Raha Shirazi (director), David Bradley Halls (writer), William Whitwham (sound designer/composer) and Caroline Martel (director). Over 500 young talents from around the world will hone their skills through lectures, seminars and workshops during the Festival.
