38 Canadian companies will be on hand at the American edition of Game Connection
Montréal, March 16, 2009 – Telefilm Canada, through the Canada New Media Fund and with support from the Canadian Interactive Alliance (CIAIC), is proud to announce that a record 38 Canadian companies will be on hand at the American edition of Game Connection, taking place in San Francisco March 24-26, 2009, as part of the Game Developers Conference (GDC). Of the 38 companies attending under the Canada banner and benefiting from guidance and group promotional support, 22 content producers have received financial support from Telefilm Canada in the form of a 35% discount on the registration fees.
Game Connection is a key business event for the videogame industry. It is an international marketplace for game developers, service providers and publishers looking to expand their network and find the right business partners. An online meeting system allows companies to identify potential partners and pre-book as many as 50 appointments during the three-day event.
Last year, in response to Telefilm Canada’s survey of the 20 attending companies, seven reported a total of 23 signed agreements, for an overall value of nearly CDN$4 million. Ultimately, Game Connection America 2008 resulted in some 100 signed and potential deals valued at CDN.$76M.
The previous success of this initiative convinced us not only to repeat the operation in San Francisco but to extend it to the European edition. This was held last October in Lyon, France, where we provided support to 14 other Canadian companies, seven of which benefited from reduced registration fees. Danny Chalifour (Interim), Director - National and International Business Development
All Canadians attending the Game Developers Conference will have an additional opportunity to build contacts at a business networking event organized by the Canadian Consulate in San Francisco in partnership with Telefilm Canada. This event will also serve to promote games developed in Canada around winter sports themes, among them snowboarding by Ubisoft, curling by Activision and hockey by EA.
